Has anyone noticed that the factory-fit REX 3 system now no longer plays though the car's sound system? ie. headphones only. This wasn't always the case.

http://www.ford.com.au/territory/personalisation.asp#

"Territory REX3 Entertainment System is available as a Genuine Ford Accessory or Factory Fit option. Please note that the factory fit REX3 Entertainment System can only be played through the infrared headphones (cannot be played through the vehicle’s audio system)"

Of course if you look further the factory fit REX 3 costs $2885 and the dealer-fit REX 3 costs $2995 - is this a push to increase dealer margins? Why can one accommodate using the stereo system and not the other?

the price difference is simply because the dealer is being paid for labour to fit it.

I think it may be partly due to safety - if you have people watching a DVD in the back seats and youre getting loud noises from it in the whole car, it could become a bit of a safety issue for 2 reasons:

* distracting the driver
* parents may kill kids for having it so damn loud

My question really is: why does it work through the speakers if you have it dealer-fitted, but not if you have it factory-fitted? I read that 6-8% of Territorys are fitted with the Rex system and I'm sure many will be caught out by this.
