View Full Version : Tyre noise

Took my Terri in because the tyre noise, which I complained about at 5000km, is getting worse and so, is the pulling to the right.
And I was told that the noise is definitely the tyres and it will get worse, but I need to contact the tyre manufacturer for warranty.
What?
Looks like the wheel alignment may be out, but that is only covered for 5000km and since I have done 11,000km I have no warranty and have to pay for the wheel alignment.

I am not concerned about paying for a four wheel alignment, but I am shocked that the tyres are not covered by Ford warranty, especially since I complained about it at 5000kms and there are others with the same issue.

The wheel alignment did not go ahead, faulty machine they reckon, but the issue is not over yet, I have been promised a phone call by Ford Customer Care, tomorrow.

I did find out some info on the pulling to the right, but I’m sorry to say that I can not tell anyone anything about it because I don’t want to get him in trouble and I promised.
If I mention it here it will definitely be passed on.

So I suggest you ask your service departments and I will keep you informed when I am sure my service department wont get into trouble. About a month or two they reckon.

EDIT: More info; http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=15885

I had an AUIII XR6 VCT before my Territory. The XR came with dunlop tyres, and the road noise off them gave the normally quiet 6 cylinder a burble good enough to take on an XR8. The Territory is much quieter, but there is still a noise from the Good Year rubber. I drive with the radio on, and loud (keeps me awake) and I can barely hear the rubber.

Good luck with Ford.

On a side note, is Good Year the only company we can buy rubber from, or can we get it from Michelin or Pirelli? I have never had a good run with Good Year, and I am not really happy with being forced to go back to them.

This is very interesting, as I had this since new. Took it back and complained, they did the wheel alligment and got it wrong first time, then fixed it on the second try. Also see my previous post http://fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=5404 on this. Would be very interested in any additional info you have.
As for the tyre noise, I agree it's loud but I assumed this was normal for an AWD with off road bias tyres.

Hi gz1, yes I remeber your post but could not find it.

I can't say too much about the suspension, last time I did something like that unwanted issues happened.
All I can say is that most dealer ships don't even know yet, my service department only found out because of the fuss I made and the phone calls to certain people.
There is a fix coming out in about two months, it may not be a recall but definetly a waranty job.

Wait two or three weeks and then give your dealer & ford Customer Care a call.
When it is safe to tell I will post it here first, might be sooner than I think. :DJsmilie:

How is your Terri since the wheel alignment?

I have to wait a while for my fix, but I am very happy with the promised resolution and how everyone bent over backwards to help me.

In regards to the tyres - your best bet is to tell them when you bought the car, what youve had done to try and fix it and ask for them to have a look at the tyres. I can see where Ford are coming from - they only put the tyres on the rims, they dont actually make them.
Give the tyre manufacturer a call and see how you go.

Since the *second* wheel alligment it's been perfect. Totally different car to drive, am really surprised they didn't pick it during pre-delivery, but then again I am not at all sure that anything was done pre-delivery.
It's now done 5000 k's and still ok.

I know what you mean.

When my dealer told me that the wheel alignment & tyres are only cover for 5000km, I asked him if it was checked at the 3000km service, he said no but it should be checked at pre-delivery.

He did tell me that the bushes in the suspension will settle at approximately 4000km and that everyone should get a 4 wheel whell alignment. I wish they told us this when we picked up the car on day one, I don't mind paying for something if it will save me time, hassle & tyres in the long run.

Interesting ... I'll get my alignment checked at the next service.

Even though I don't have any issues with suspension or tyres though ... but I'd like the tyre to last a while ... cos I doubt they'd be cheap to replace.

There is a replacement Lower Control Arm to rectify steering pull. The parts have been out for a while now, but there is a shortage at the moment that wont be overcome for 6 - 8 weeks.
This is not a recall, the Control Arms will only be fitted to vehicles of customers that have a specific complaint and the vehicle has been diagnosed.

I noticed; steering pull, noisey tyres and the tread become feathered on the front tyres.

Ford have promised to replace all affected parts in the above mentioned time frame.

Interesting indeed, What could be wrong, and more importantly what is the fix, that only applies to *some* cars and not others...
Do you have any more details on this johnydep, i.e. do they alter camber, castor or any other part of the geometry, and why only to the cars that complain?. What's the darwback of getting these control arms changed? Makes me think there must be a drawback somewhere else they would be fitting all of them.
I know my car drives ok but the steering angles are different on each side, compensated for by different toe-outs on each side to make the car go straight, so maybe I'm a candidate.
Or perhaps we should all start complaining :frazzled:

Yes I have been wondering the same thing, and will be gathering more info when they call me with the parts.

The service manager reckons that a wheel alignment would fix the problem, which I gave the go ahead for, but that the tyres would not be covered under warranty. So I called Ford, and was told about the lower control arm being a problem, but the guy would not tell me anything else.

I would rather not have another set of control arms fitted, especially if it is not a recall, as I believe it must affect the handling in some way, which on the Territory is fantastic.
But I can not handle driving a car with noisy tyres, it sounds almost as bad as those old mud/snow tyres that you here on some full on 4WD's as they drive by. I thought it was a bad set of tyres.

Keep an eye on your tyres, on mine the tread has feathered and that is what is causing the noise.

When I find out more I'll post it.

They reckon the parts are due for release in 5 - 6 weeks, he called them "revised lower control arms" and told me they will be fitted to both sides of the front and tyres to be replaced.
Tyres are only being replaced because I informed my dealer about the steering pull and tyre noise at 5000km and they noted it, the Ford Customer guy was in contact with them all the time while talking to me.

Just got confirmation, the parts for my Terri are due for delivery to my Dealer in two weeks.

The revised lower control arms will not affect the Terri's unique handling & steering, in anyway.
The new arms have provision for wheel alignment adjustments.

Hmmm... what's to stop us all asking for those?

Dealer road test & assessment.

If Service manager suspects the LCA is the problem he contacts Ford.
