View Full Version : Things to fix in the next Terri

Hi Territory - something to add to the wish list (I've noted that this thread doesn't exist in this site), just one of those really little things that bug me...
There's a plastic bar with indents in it that holds the doors open at slightly open and fully open. Is there any way that future versions can have an extra position at 2/3rd open. The current settings are about 1/3rd and fully open but the 1/3 is a bit useless and fully open isn't always possible in many Sydney car parks. When you've got kids to get in and out of the vehicle that sort of stuff becomes quite important. I know it's only a 10c bit of plastic but it causes more than 10c worth of annoyance.
Another little thing that most probably gets ignored by most is the dashboard instrument layout. It definitely makes sense to use the BA instruments but is there any way to ensure that future versions have the tacho and speedo together rather than separated by lower priority needles. With the Terri's higher seating position the steering wheel often obscures the top of the speedo which is the bit you use most often. I don't want to adjust the steering wheel higher as it's at the right height - it's just that the only instruments I see well are temp and fuel :-)

The TX I have doesn't seem to have an amperage guage. Does the Ghia or TS? If not, why the deletion and what about its return?
My vote goes for a usable cargo cover, a bigger fuel tank and a six speed box.
At least the six speed is coming :yummy:

If you're talking about a Battery volt meter, the reason is because the Territory is pretty similar to the Falcon in specification and trim levels. I.E a XT/Futura is the Falcon equivalent of a Territory TX, a Fairmont is the Falcon equivalent of a TS Territory and a Ghia Territory is essentially the same in trim levels and options as a Fairmont Ghia Sedan.
Things I'd like to see in the next Territory:
* 6spd Auto and a Manual Option
* Turbo/V8 Option
* Diesel Option
* Altitude/Angle Gauges a la Landcruiser etc
* Option similar to RTV Ute - more ground clearance and Diff Lock for RWD models
* CrewCab Ute Model similar to Crewman except with decent rear seats!

My sister has a brand new Landcruiser Sahara Turbo Diesel and it doesn't have
Altitude/Angle Gauges! None of the new landcruisers have them...

I test drove a BA XR6 when they were first released. I had an AU111 XR6, and had the 4 idiot gauges on my Dashboard, and naturally asked where the other two gauges were. The dealer told me that they were deleted because Ford believed they were unnecessary, because drivers were not looking at them. I used my Battery and Oil gauges daily, and miss not having them in the Territory, but the way they are set out are WORLDS better than the AU Falcon.
Things that need fixing:
1. A Better lifting mechanism for the rear tailgate. My Wife has trouble closing the whole portion, and once when going around a roundabout, the boot flew open. Luckily there was nobody behind her, or anybody in the car, because it could have been risky.
2. A Better steering wheel feel. A LandRover Discovery driving mate believes the steering is too direct, and that you could cause an accident if you mis-judged the corner. I have not had that trouble, but after driving his TD5, the Territory feels more sure footed.
3. More control over the Traction Control. I have had trouble pulling my boat out of the water because the Traction Control was limiting power. It was a fun time, because a southerly was blowing, there was a million boats at the wharf, so me struggling with my car. It worked with the TC off, and in Tiptronic. I should not have to worry about manually changing the gears to get my 1800Kg boat out off a ramp.
4. CLOCK POSITION. This is bad. Move it into the ICC before you cause an accident. I have looked in the ICC before, and after a lapse of concentration, I swerved across the road and hit a Fox. I can't complain about the strength of the body panels. Thankfully, I now wear a watch whilst driving.
5. An Accelerator with more feel. My Lexus has a better feeling accelerator pedal. It is however, a conventional accelerator, not a computer, but it does have feeling, unlike the stiff pedal in the Territory.
Other than that, The car is built like a brick shit-house, and hopefully had no real problems for the time I have it.

The steering is too direct? That's a good one! :rolleyes: But I guess after driving a truck it would seem so. From my point could be *more* direct, but that would make dirt driving harder. But the steering definetly needs more on center feel and more positive self centering.

paxtonandrew & gz1 - the steering is a real balance between maintaining good feedback and reasonable on centre feel, yet keeping the steering light enough to feel nimble in parking/metro conditions.
boat towing - did you accelerate slowly to maximise TC grip? Did you try level one DSC off to disable engine intervention? It would only reduce power if it thought you were accelerating too much for the grip conditions. I agree it shouldn't require you to manually change gears. (I really must post those tips!)
paulvdb - re the door opener with 3 notches - cant change that in the short term but will look into it re long term
clock - There are clock supporters and clock haters now...
Some interesting suggestions b2f.

Well I don't think it really needs a V8 or a manual option (am I getting old or what) and I suppose you could put those gimicky gauges were the clock now is (TS/Ghia) but the rest of your list seems spot on to me.
Glad to see support growing for the DualCab ute, don't let the R5 concept die!

To be honest I dont think it needs manual/V8 options either, but it might help it sell even better. I'm just all for as many options as possible, and an FPV Territory would be rather nice even if it was a complete wank.
I'm all for an R5 or similar model.I notice Ssanyong have just brought out something along those lines (called a 'Rexton' or something) and for what it is it actually looks pretty good. The dash layout is a bit all over the place though.

I came from towing my boat in an AU111 XR6 Manual, were I would throw it into first and floor it, which created an acceptable amount of wheel spin, but it would right itself. In the Territory however, I put it into D Sports, and floored it. The car attempted to spin, and then power was limited to the gears, before I gave up. The ramp was slippery, and I was in a hurry, so the Traction Control was not turned off. I Parked the car, moved my boat off the wharf and on the trailer. I neglected to put the TC onto stage one, and this may have been detrimental to my end result. I have found that slow acceleration gets the car off the line with a boat on it.

Link the side mirrors and pedal position to the seat memory...can you have it done by this arvo Territory?

I second that. My wife is ALWAYS changing the mirror position, but she doesn't know that you can move the pedals, so that is not really a problem.
Lets get that fixed this week Territory!

Oh, and when you flick the SSS to the left, show the gear the car is currently in so you can shift with more certainty. Currently shows D when you shift into SSS, so the first shift can be a lottery...do that one on Monday in your lunch break or while Mr Gorman isn't looking.
Or better still take these ideas to him and get a promotion. Mate, the electronics boffins are gonna luv u. Dont think you need any hardware for this stuff.

Ssangyong version is based on the Musso wagon. It looks like the rear tub is separate to which is a good idea.
I have another one. The accelerator pedal is too stiff. My right foot always hurts after a long drive. It also could have a faster kick-down response built in. I am over the computerised pedal. There is a delay when I press the accelerator down, and with urban driving is not good. Lets see this fixed with the Mark11

-Link the side mirrors with the seat memory in Ghia.
- Autodip option for passenger side mirror when selecting reverse, for all Terri's.
-Get rid of the hard plastic finish on the dash and replace with the softer feel like on the BA.
-Make the center console a tad narrower. I tend to bang my knee on this, as width wise I seem to have less room then the BA Falcon.
-Six speed auto box.
-I would have loved to of been able to option the V8 from the Fairmont.
-Have the option to have the clock displayed on the center display
-Sports steering wheel as standard on Ghia.
-Descent control as standard on AWD models (yes I know this is probably a Mark II feature anyway).
-Good headlights on the Terri, but not quite as good on highbeam as Falcon. Problem seems to be that the lights are modified Falcon units. Doesnt quite work as it should.
-A choice of colour palletes for the interior.
-A more interesting choice of colours for the exterior. Picking a colour was fairly easy for Territory as my wife and I didnt like quite a few of them, but that made the range to choose from very limited. Dont expect to love them all, but there seemed quite a few "love it or loath it" colours in the range. A couple for variety is nice, but there seems to many for Territory.
-Either fit a rear spoiler as standard or modify the rear liftback so dust falling on you isnt a problem after being on dirt roads for a bit.
To be fair though, I am very impressed with our Territory. Ford got the car as close to spot on as you can reasonably expect for a first go. :) What I mention here is really just fine tuning.
Oh and before I forget. Better dealer network that dont have a huge hissy fit and wont service your car (this is Grant McCarroll Ford Armidale), because you dared to buy a car from a dealer who met your expectations on service and price. The kind of crap I got of the dealer principal at Grant McCarroll, puts you off buying a Ford - period.

Daniel

Why not a fully optionable Territory. No model barriers, just one Territory with any options.
Agree with DanielXR8 about the dash width. Always have had this problem, banging the knee on the dash. To add to it, there is a relatively sharp moulding join where the knee rubbs and can get quite saw after a long trip. Going from the AU Fairmont (where the dash and transmission are so much further forward, towards the engine bay) compared to the Territory. The Territory design can often cause drinks to fly when you use the transmission lever in a hurry, for passing etc. Which brings me to the next, "FIX the cup holders to suit Australian drinks", thus making them stay put. The EFII Fairmont was shocking, everything fell out of them when braking, the AU Fairmont much better, and still the best. The AU even fits a square milk drink in it, although 600ml coke still is a tight fit.

Lol I agree with you about the cup holders, havent had much experience with the Territory ones but my old EF's ones were a joke (lost about $20 of Maccas drinks because of them!), the AU ones arent much better.
Best ones ive ever had in a car are the ones in my Focus - nice and deep and a good tight fit.

Hi Daniel - I'm not sure I understand this bit. You say picking a colour was easy and then you say that the range was limited then you say that there are too many unconservative colours.
There's 5 conservative colours and 4 more interesting colours. All that's missing is a dark green, dark blue and maybe a bright colour like yellow?
Hey - I just noticed a new colour "Kashmir". Looks good. Envi's gone. Maybe Menace and Blue Pearl would be good

I think he meant too many love it or loath it" colours and not enough conventional colours.
But in todays market place where customers are an increasingly varied mob, what is conventional?
