Many people hate them but 4WDs are a godsend for those who need to transport children in safety, writes BILL McKINNON.

Ok, four-wheel-drive haters, can we get one thing straight before we start? It's a free country, 4WDs are legal and some - make that many - people like them.

We're not here to advocate or condemn their use, we're just humble reporters, engaged today to sort out the pearls from the swine. If your outrage is stirring, call Harold Scruby or Sally Loane on Monday for a tut-tut session. Not us. Please.

Good article - loved the coments on the Prado - take note Fordless and friends.

Hmm appears he got the price wrong on the TX RWD and quoted the TX AWD price instead.

Also got the fuel consumption wrong. When the Territory came out it was one the great furphys of all time that the reviewers were saying it'd get a miserable 20 l /100. I think most users of this forum have found the same as me - that the figures are far far better than expected, down in the 11s to 13s generally.

Yes excellent review of the Prado Ouzo! Darn - there's that word "truck" again! But putting a Disco in the same category as a Prado or Pajero - get real Drive.

Deviating slightly I was reminded of the Terri's excellent turning circle today. Where I drop off my son at an after school activity I do a U turn in the street with the Territory just clearing the kerbs in one go. I watched a lady in a Honda Odessey doing it today - the Honda couldn't, had to do a three point turn.

I was wondering if Ford had slipped through a price rise now the <$40k Territory message had sunk in. Pleased to here that it's just a journo's furphy.
