On occasion (and as unfortunate as it is) some animals going into the pound require a little more 'TLC' and vet attention than other animals. Prices are generally indicative of the costs to desex, worm, vaccinate, general check ups and any special 'needs' that the animal may have...Desexing costs will vary from dog to dog dependent on size (larger animals require more anaesthetic, etc.).

Best Friends is highly recommended, there's also AWDRI (Australian Working Dog Rescue) and Staffy Rescue (they're Sydney based and don't just have staffies)...there's plenty of pets out there that need help, and many owners who just don't have the time, and don't particularly care...It makes me bloody cry! :(
