Is it worth getting one of these ~125 ebay CAI systems or should I just do a DIY using the stock location for air intake?

The CAI seems like it would place the filter down behind the fog light. I guess there is enough pressure down there. The stock location isn't so bad if using a bigger pipe to the airbox/resonator assembly since the air pressure is high enough at that location when moving.

There are also more expensive CAI with foam filters and custom airboxes but I'm not sure they would be worth it on an older car. (Pipercross, volante etc)
