If I recall correctly (may be wrong) the AUII/III XR8 boxes (and T-series) have a difference in the valve body and apply the B2 band in 1st gear in drive. Some of the AUII XR8s clunked badly going down into first and ford had to replace the valve bodies to fix them. The normal ones only apply B2 in manual 1st and reverse. They should all work though. The solenoid shift patterns are the same. Adaptive Shift is just software.
The non-XR boxes are often cheaper. Don't overlook fairlanes, there are a few v8 ones around and I've seen the boxes out of those go dirt cheap on ebay/gumtree.
