The dealer GM called with an update yesterday as promised.
Ford couldn't reproduce the fault but have suggested the 'master computer' needs replacing, so I figure he means the
TCM. Apparently all seems fine otherwise, including fluid level and condition. So, it looks like I'll be getting a new
TCM and he also agreed that new fluid/filter would be done.
