Have a google search. It's mainly the inlet valve that gets carboned up - due to oil vapours from the
PCV being deposited on them & getting baked on (due to no fuel wash).
On a direct injection engine, the only cleaning that the fuel/additive can do is to the injectors/piston/ring land areas.
