PS: Not as good as Sox's idea of getting rid of the original stuff altogether, but can work well if only mildy worn (only moves up and down), or you want to increase longevity of a new one.

Some guys have had a pretty good run from doing something similar to what you've done.
I did it myself originally with some washers.
In the end I just wanted to build a better mouse trap as I found other weaknesses inherent in the design.
