Default Re: were have our great race tracks gone?

Found this when reading about Ron Thorpe's '64 AC Cobra

Caversham Airfield Circuit Perth WA.......

Quote:
June 7th Caversham 6 hour, 2nd to the 250 LM ferrari of Spencer Martin and David McKay. Although Ron entered the race with his wife Molly down as the co-driver, as required by the rules, but he drove the entire 6 hours solo, massive effort that he did each year he ran there. Caversham is in Western Australia, Ron and Ann would load the Cobra in his Austin 3 ton Cobra transporter (see picture below) and drive 4300 kilometres (2600 Miles) on mostly rough and unsealed roads there and back for this race each year. It took the little truck, its passenger and the well shaken Thorp, one week to get there. then he drove the 6 hour, hopped in and drove it all back home.... Legend.

Ron and his (co-driver lol) wife Molly pose for a press shot at Caversham.

Pitstop at the Caversham "Le-Mans" 6 hour race.

Ron won the race in 1966....

More about the track itself below.......

Quote:
The airfield was later utilised as a motor racing circuit, hosting its first event in 1946. It became Western Australia's premier motor racing venue, hosting the Australian Grand Prix in 1957 and 1962 and the Six Hour Le Mans endurance race from 1955 to 1968.[2] Racing activities ceased when the airfield was re-activated as a military facility for radio communications, and Western Australian racing shifted to Wanneroo Raceway in 1969
