Some info from earlier posts now makes a bit more sense.

There's a small bit of flat bar with one hole in it that I was not sure of before. Now, when you look at the gearbox mount on the cross member, the location of the hole makes sense:
So there appears to be some welding involved. And now those strange arms for the gearbox mount make more sense.
