It isn't just that large sedans fell out of favour. For the most part, there were no alternative large RWDs from each maker, so it was worth the investment to make them while the market wanted them. Once the market moved to SUVs and smaller 4cyls, each manufacturer already had cars in their range to cover these, so little justification to build here. Territory only got the nod because of platform sharing with the Falcon, no way it would have been developed if it didn't.

Arguably, this bought a lot of time for Ford and I cant help but wonder what the situation would be for Holden if they'd followed suit and built an actual SUV off the Commodore platform (instead of the half arsed 4wd Commodore wagons).....
