Yeah the non-amplified kits wouldn't be any good. (either the original unamplified ford cable or ASL cable) The amplified Ford kit which was introduced to replace the original aux cable was still terrible, couldn't imagine the how bad the un-amp'd version would be.
If you are considering swapping to an amplified kit, get the ASL line conditioner - much better results.
