I think most chassis & engines were imported in those days.
That's how our industry began. Around WWI the Gotv. put a ban on the import of complete cars, so everybody started importing the mechanical parts in CKD packs & built bodies to fit them here.
For example Holden was called Holden Motor Body Builders, before it merged with GM.
