To me it sounds like the trans pump is on the way out. I had that happen years ago and it sounded the same for a while before it gave up. On the other hand, my wife had a 2.3l mazda 6 years ago and (whilst not being a rocket ship) it was a good motor for the size of the car and we never had any mechanical issues. Is it costly to replace a trans pump?
The Mazda 6 2.3 only went up to 2007 or thereabouts, not sure of the exact date.
