Might improve faster than you think. Focus on battery improvements have only really taken off in the last 5-10 years. Previously the focus was more on the devices it was driving. Problem with current lithium-ion batteries is that it relies on graphite, one of the dirtiest resource to dig out. The only real profitable mines are mainly based in China, I'm guessing due to less environmental restrictions.

The ute looks ugly imho. But so did Kias and Hyundais when they first came out. Aren't we the biggest importers of chinese made vehicles? Might start to see a few around soon enough.
