Apologies for the 'thread mine' here...I recently had a similar issue where the back-lighting of the headunit / stereo facia wasn't working, however would still play music. I looked for the fuse and pulled it out to check it...was ok. Put it back in and still the same.

Disconnected battery for a couple of minutes and voila, all working again.
