Plenty of players sand back their guitars for better tone, along with not cutting the string at the headstock after restringing amongst countless other things.
You'd need a pretty dam good ear to pick a painted guitar from an unpainted guitar especially sitting in the living room running a tranny amp.
I'd strip the existing paint though..
