Default weird shake

hey guys my wife has an escort ghia 2litre 1980 and when you go round a corner it gets this really bad wobble in the steering wheel like it is trying to rip it out your hands.have checked wheel bearings has newish ball joints and the rubbers seem fine .also had it in for a wheel alighnment asked them to have a look they said it seemed fine .what could it be any help would be grateful.

that really does sound like a wheel bearing but if you've had it checked by pros then it should be alright. Have you looked to see if the coupling between the steering column and rack and pinion is not half broken and then check the rack and pinion itself.

If you can not find anything obvious, I would suggest taking it to Pedders Suspension and asking them to do a $14 inspection. I used my local one to inspect my car after a major accident repair. They found heaps. Obviously they offer this service to generate work, but at least you might get a good idea of what is wrong. Hope this helps....

By all means get the inspection but I advice not to get any work done with them. They quoted me in excess of $1500 for new nothalane bushes (fited) and leaf re-tension.

Quiete a joke.

Thats exactly why you don't go to pedders for a brake and safety inspection.
Does the vibration happen every time or just when you are braking into the corner. Sometimes you can get warped discs which vibrates up thru the steering wheel. Another possible cause is a dudd rim. Swap the back rims for the front and see if that makes any difference.
