Default Injector clean.

I have a MY11 Mondeo TDCI. When I last had the car serviced, Ford rang me to recommend an injector clean. I didn't go ahead with it at the time but I'm thinking about getting it done as my car is now due for its 3 year service. Anyone had it done?
Ford are quoting me $250 just for the injector clean.

From my experience with all of my fuel injected cars is that they don't need a clean very often at all. Most independent mechanics I know have suggested to me that the dealer recommendation of a regular injector clean is a money making scam. Just my thoughts.

Yeah, the mechanic I use for my other car told me the same. I just thought it might be more necessary for a diesel car.

there are benefits from cleaning the injectors from time to time based on mileage and fuel quality, but many times it is upsold to frequently

Does anyone know if the stuff you can buy over the counter at servos, supercheap etc does the same thing?

pretty useless, it's good to help with preventative maintenance but does not really clean at all

You are best off running a good fuel that has a cleaner added. For that purpose I run the good Vortex stuff. I will occasionally put some additional Nulon diesel cleaner through in higher concentrations. Never had a problem.

How do you actually get the bottle in? I tried last week, but was somewhat reluctant to push hard on the springy flappy thing! LOL!

GK,
you should have a small plastic funnel in with your spare / jack etc.

This will open the fuel flap. allowing access for additives, manual re-fueling.

+1 on that Steve. In fact you cannot get anything into the fuel tank without it. You can buy them from auto stores. a must have IMHO

Now that you mention it, I saw that funnel when I first got the car six months back. Didn't think of it again until your reminder.

Cheers,

GK

When I was working at a Honda dealership we had this attachment that went onto the fuel rail with this injector clean can, it wasn't one of those ones you put in the fuel tank you buy from SCA for example, but yeah it was upsold to everyone left right and center.

When I bought my car I didn't have the funnel so I thought it was normal just to push open the flap and pour it in which worked, but it goes straight into the overflow into the floor.

That was a waste of a bottle of injector cleaner.
