Default Towing more than 2500kg's

We are currently in the market for a wagon/dual cab ute that we can tow our '65 galaxie around with...

I have set the budget limit at around $5000 but we can sell some stuff and go higher if needed

the Galaxie weigh's no more than 1800kg's
not sure how much the average car trailer weighs though ???
(800-1500kg's maybe)

just trawling the internet most of the vehicles that can tow at or over 2500kg's are Late model navara's and the old Landcruisers / Patrols

anything over 3000kg's and you need an F250 (way over budget)
or surprise surprise... A Range Rover (up to 4000kg's)

anybody able to shed more light on vehicles available ?
or maybe where i could find more info on towing capacities

Cheers, Sean

First thing is are you going to rent car trailers or are going to buy one? If renting you'll be lucky to find one that has a GVM of over 2000kg. Most rental ones are between 600-800kg, so that allows no more than 1400kg legally.
Putting an 1800kg vehicle on one will basically void any insurance.
Judging by how much it looks like you've spent (time and money) on your car, its not really worth skimping on something so important.

You could certainly get a trailer built to handle 1800kg, but they arnt cheap.

As for vehicle, you are basically looking at old full chassis 4wds.

79 f100. very basic but you cant kill them . they will tow anything you can attach to the towball !. we still have one in use atm (and a spare one out in the paddock). but if you want p/s,a/c,p/w any type of luxury effies probably not the go
ps if your trailer has brakes legally you should be ok

1994 Land Rover TDI, Desiel, 2.5L 4cyl. can tow up to 3,500kg's. Beautiful to drive, can wing them for $5,000

Default trailer

I would first find a trailer you can fit it on. I hired a trailer to tow my tbird and it was to wide to go on ,may be the case with your galaxie and as mentioned finding a trailer to carry that weight may be an issue.

Early 80's landcrusiers and Nisan patrols are the ducks guts. But if you have the dollars then 10k will get you into a late 90's explorer with air con and power steering etc.

Sean, good points made about the trailer. Don't know how long or wide the Gal is, but I've towed a ZH Fairlane on the twin-wheeled hire trailers from Mobile garages and it barely fitted on there. The tyres were squashed up against the sides of the trailer. Towing it all with an AU wagon was interesting too... *ahem*

But provided that's not a problem, you probably couldn't go past an older fourby. Land Rovers, Patrols and what have you... I'm sure you could pick up an early 80s Range Rover for five grand. The A/C might not work anymore, and if it's a V8 you could chuck it on LPG. Just hope they don't go "bang"!

Over 2000kg GVM requires four wheel electric brakes with a breakaway unit, makes for slightly more expensive trailer.

ZH Fairlane should do the trick, although I don't know the official towing capacity, but Dad's old one felt as though it would have towed a house given the chance.

well as Gobes32 said, you could get a late 90's explorer for 10k but they come out with the factory option "random explosion" so you may want to steer clear.

when i sold my EF2 gli old mate towed it away in his ZH fairlane on gas. it was nice too.

Yeah I've been looking at the Land / Range Rovers... towing capacity is amazing with up to
4000kg's on some Rangie's but the motor/trans on them makes me cringe

Found that out early when I bought the Galaxie Sedan... Thanks
Luckily I hired the Kennards trailer as it was the biggest !

Really don't wanna pay $10k on a Exploda with a crappy cam chain setup

Got the Trailer sorted Nick. The local Kennards hire have one they use for hauling small
earthmoving machinery which is about a foot wider than the Galaxie and more than long enough ;)
Not keen on the 3.5 V8's bit the Land/Range Rovers do have the best towing capacity so far !

What ever we get, there's always room for a Clevo/C4 conversion down the track somewhere
just need something i don't have to touch for a year or two for now though

weve tried that with our ol zh . if not perfectly balanced they make for a pretty interesting ride NOT. imo newish cars dont have the weight in them to tow heavy car trailers safely. if effies arnet the go maybe troopie/patrol wagon. as far as jeep,l/rover,r/rovers go ok they look good but WHEN (not if) they break down its going to be a financial nightmare
