Default Gearbox Vibration

Hey guys i have a vibration coming through my gearbox at high revs in 2nd and 3rd (havent tested in top of 4th). The Vibration is felt through the gearknob mainly but passengers notice it aswell and i was just wondering what it could be?? The car is a manual xr8 aswell.

In order of probability ...

1. Tailshaft uni or gearbox/engine mount

2. Diff - front bush mount or pinion bearing

3. Loose gear selector

4. Rear wheel balance

2. Could be this as car is pretty low maybe that could be affecting it??

3. It has a short shifter so definitly a possibilty.

4. just had wheels balanced

So was the gearbox mount itself replaced at the same time as the engine mounts?

With lowering an IRS vehicle the tailshaft angle doesn't alter so it shouldn't be related directly and the diff bushes likewise not directly affected by lowering - they just flog out with age.

My money is on the unis.

tailshaft out of balance? or extention housing bush unsure if the manual gearboxes have the bush like the autos do. but a possible lead for you. good luck

I'm not sure if the gearbox mounts were replaced I don't think they were. The only thing that about it being an issue with the diff or tailshaft is that it's not wheel speed related it's engine speed (happens at high revs only) so I was thinking it had to do with something with the gearbox/engine.. am I correct in saying this or is that an incorrect assumption?

That sounds like sound reasoning.

Could even be in the clutch or throw-out bearing. And as well as the shifter, it could also be internal like gearbox bearings or thrust races. Hope it isn't your flywheel loose - has been known to happen and the symptoms are similar to what you describe.

If you are sure it is engine speed related and not road speed related then I'd be looking very seriosly at trouble shooting it sooner rather than later.

hmmm thats what im worried about it being the gearbox internals or worse engine internals...

the clutch throw bearings vibrate real bad ,especialy in 4th and 5th at high speed .
try putting your foot on the clutch and see if the vibration stops.
