I had an AU2 Ghia that I got down to 6l/100k and 980km DTE several times.
It was strange though as even when I was getting better than 10l/100km I always needed to fill up after about 500km.
The manual must have lied when it stated that the fuel capacity was 68l.

The LTD's, DU.

Id go the 5.0 option.
I've read a lot of the NU/DU/AU Fairlane/LTD owners here refer to them as AU, and that it was actually AU, not NU/DU. All way too confusing!

If engine choice is no real concern, then I would remove it from the equation and go for the best quality car at the best price: remember, what you save on initial price, you will pay 5 fold on repair bills.

Personally, I would not even look at the 6 cylinder but that's just me.
In the end yes, it will come down to what's the best car available.

Was this a Fairlane or Fairmont? V8 or I6?

Thanks.

Owned an AU Fairmont Ghia with the VCT.

I was doing 14 - 16L per 100km even after I got an exhaust done for her, go the V8, what you save in petrol will offset rego.

The AU Fairlane and LTD is exactly that, an AU, the last N Series was the NL and DL...

Knew it! Probably should let someone know to change the brochures to AU, instead of NU and DU!

I've owned 6s and 8s, also owned a fair lane Ghia and ltd.

For a lwb model a v8 is a must. I wouldn't waste your time comparing. Get the 8.

I'd take each for a drive to see what the difference is.

Go the 8 mate.. Having had both VCT and V8 in my car, I strongly urge you to find a nice V8 one.. You won't regret it..
I can get quite good economy with the 8 too.. Well, I did until I put a 3500rpm hi stall in it..

At the end of the day though, they are both great engines, so whichever way you go, you will not be disappointed..

Cheers

Thanks Kr1s.
I'm definitely going to try to find a nice V8 one. Will be a nice change!
I'd probably keep it as well, and use it as my daily while I convert the AU2 Wagon to RTV spec, when my parents are ready to move on from it!

Got time to go looking at cars in person soon so hopefully I'll find one soon!

Cheers
