I've been scammed !!!

Buyers be aware there is a scammer on gumtree advertising AU Fairlane parts for sale.
I transferred $95 into this persons account for an au fairlane headlight which included postage with tracking.
After a week i'd heard nothing so tried ringing him but his phone was turned off, since then i've sent countless sms, emails through gum tree and phone calls but nothing.

There is 25 ads by this f_____ar__hole, he is also on other sites so beware
I rang an address which is on one of his ads which is a museum/gallery in NSW the lady i spoke to new nothing about car parts for sale on gumtree.
since then my daughter who is more computer savvy than me googled his number only to find out this person has scammed other people, one of for $325 who had his bank freeze the money in the scammers account, only then to receive threatening emails and phone calls.
Apparralently the scammer rang the bank several times portraying a solicator and bank manager he also tried to con the bank saying he needed the money because his mother needs surgery.

Lesson... Gumtree is only good for pick ups, unlike ebay where you can get buyer protection.

Contact your bank and do a charge back ASAP. More then likely he would have taken the money out so his account will go in debt and be charged some absurd fee, he'll lose money if he does this often enough! Assuming people do chargebacks.

Probably a pre paid sim. Basically untraceable to who owns it. Would have bought it so that he could scam people like this.

You can report him to the Police, their fraud squad will look into it, especially considering he's so busy.
We had a guy in Perth recently renting out a room that didn't exist, he got caught out and charged with about 4 frauds from memory.

Not necessarily. You still need to activate a pre paid sim. That means you can either activate it as an existing customer or as a new customer. If you try a new customer so your phone company doesn't link you, you still need an address and a license number. Otherwise anyone could get a sim and discuss plans for illegal activity and not be traced. I remember sometime ago a rep from Telstra telling me you can put in any random info but even with correct info I have trouble activating sims for my clients, so not sure how the fraudulent route would work.

I just had a thought! Phone companies can look up a number and provide all the details that had been provided at activation. That means if you worked at Telstra and that is a Telstra number or at Optus and its an Optus number etc you could find out all the information, and check the other numbers for a link. Not sure i'd risk my job on it though! Have seen it done in the past though.

My partner works for optus and their are huge fines involved if you get caught giving out private information aswell as criminal charges.
Better to let the cops handle it and you have a rego number for them to get details from aswell.

Well, you can't just ring a phone company and details from a phone number. Although, think of this.

You go into the a Telstra/ Optus/ Vodafone shop etc. and they bring up your details via your phone number. Before any changes are made to your account they ask for your address, name and D.O.B to confirm that you are the account holder. That means they can find out the details of ANY phone number that is from the company they work at.

An example of this happening is, Joe gets a job at the local Optus store, his friend comes in and says "someone rang me up and made all these threats, can you find out who they are?", Joe then proceeds to help his buddy out while committing multiple offenses against the law and company policy. His buddy gets the info he wants and uses that to scare the guy threatening him.

Back to the point, a number is traceable unless fraudulent information had been provided but as I said, I don't believe it would work. Anyone care to prove it does work and admit to fraud lol?

Use this name John smith, licence number 067544357, address 32 high st, dob 12/10/2012. There you go enough detail to set a mobile phone account up all fake.

Phone companies are not linked up to any RTA and you can buy a SIM card from the supermarket and set it up over the phone or net.

As I said, I'm not sure, as a Network Tech I deal a lot with phone companies. Setting up fake accounts for mobile broadband isn't part of what I do haha.

But I get your point. Very easy to get a pre paid from a service station with a fake ID. To the OP, unfortunately, you case is a relatively small case to follow up with the cops. Best bet is to send a detailed email to gumtree and what ever his using to ban his ip address.

We are too soft in this sort of crime. Tell me, with computer tracking technology via Ip address and with mobile phone signal tracking exactly how long would it take to bust this guy and throw the book at him? 30min? 1hr perhaps? I mean, if they could even be bothered? Internet crime is rampant and will go up not down.

Can you even do a charge back from regular savings accounts to other savings accounts?
