Yep, the Neptune Servo on South Road Darlington was always a 'must stay awake' moment for me as a kid travelling home to the hills from Adelaide.

Nice find!!!

My parents nearly bought the Golden Fleece in Walebing (bottom left corner of the last pic) circa 1976, we visited the station a few times and it looked pretty much like the pics in that brochure, one thing I remember was the kids food had funny names, eg - Snakes on a Raft which was spaghetti on toast.

Fairly sure this was it -

http://maps.google.com.au/maps?oe=ut...ed=0CAwQ8gEwAA

I remember it being larger though, but was only a kid at the time.

In the subject of obsolete service station companies, AMOCO was taken over by BP and the AMOCO refinery on Bulwer Island, Brisbane was also claimed by BP.

This is before my time but a few years ago while using uniquecarsandparts.com.au I discovered the many variations of the "AMOCO in my machine" campaign in the 1970s. The link smally351 posted was the first version sung by Alan Johnston, who also sung the original "Come on Aussie, Come on" tune. There's a bit of trivia for you.

Ah memories. I remember all those. There even used to be a couple of SOLO petrol stations on the Gold Coast. They've all since disappeared as most got pulled down and apartments put up in their place. Apparently at one time, SOLO was one of the largest independent fuel companies in Australia. It was set up by the 2 guys that eventually started the independent 'Liberty'.
It was eventually sold off to Ampol in 1990.

I also liked Ampol. They had a good logo too. It's a shame they merged with Caltex. It was sad to see all of them on the Gold Coast eventually change over to Caltex.
Ah well, life goes on.

Thanks for the photos. They're great.

There was a Golden Fleece servo just around the bend East from the Swagman ( I think the Swagman burnt down actually) in FTG toward Station St, Broome Bros garage which was also the RACV depot, and across the road was the local BMC dealer. Remember BMC that sold Morris's, Austins, MG's etc? That was in the 1960's.

I used to work at a Golden Fleece in 1979.
When I started that year, it was 18.9c/l and when I left at the end of the year it was 28.9c/l for Super.

So petrol really wasn't all that much cheaper back then, considering inflation? What was the average middle class wage back in the late 70s, about $200 a week?

I pass that AMPOL that was linked earlier (the Chermside one) on my way to and from work, I can't say I'm surprised that it's really just a Caltex in disguise. I might consider using it over the ones I usually go to, I've only ever seen a single car there at once where as I waited 30 minutes to fill up at the one closest to my house.

Thanks for that Jim , memories of a much nicer and better Australia . I could almost smell the parrafin going into the venerable old Meatboxes , and the sounds of the Derwents was just magnificent .

When I first moved to Australia in 79, I used to see tankers around Sydney City itself with Golden Fleece painted on the side. until I got our into the burbs and saw the gas stations it was a mystery what was in the tankers.

I remember well filling up at a Solo in St Peters/Marrickville area in the 80, s. Car I drove was a VK Chrysler Ranger, one of the best cars I have owned as you could easily fix and service most things yourself. Today I struggle really struggle to change a headlight bulb on my 2008 Focus.

Anyone remember when service stations used to have a mechanical workshop, & all the locals knew & trusted the mechanic, & would take their cars to get serviced there.
My Grandparents used to live 2 doors up from a Golden Fleece Servo, & I used to visit it quite a lot as a kid with my Grandfather, when he'd take his car to fill up, get repaired or just go over for a chat with the mechanic. Ahh, good times.
