I've been hit by roos 3 times. I say hit by because in all three cases I spot the bugger, slow right down to like 20km/h till i know what the hell it's doing, when they decide to dive head first onto the side of my car

This has happened 3 times!

Wrote off a car hitting one once. Had a Shu-Roo after that and no probs, still saw prenty though - just not suicidal ones.

Emu's hurt too!

Yeah, don't swerve though.

Second the roo's hitting cars though. Not sure why that is. I had a mate in a Festiva clear pushed off the road as one bounded into his rear quarter. Must have taken a disliking to the colour?

Because the grass is greener on the side of the road. Rain runoff or dew runoff. Better grass, more roos.

A number of years ago we hit one at beechworth (VIC) in a TN Magna. We were travelling at 80km/h when we swapped paint for fur. Front left was all totalled. Fortuately we were still able to drive it back to adelaide ( 9 hr trip) without to much drama. Perhaps people's headlights can dazzle them?

no pics sorry but 2 years back dad was driving down south in the now sold BA mont. doing about 110kmh on the cruise down a long deserted road. out of nowhere a huge roo jumps out and luckily he was able to pull into the middle of the road so the roo didnt come through the screen. he landed on the bonnet and face down into the drivers fender and ended up smashing the bar, bonnet, drivers headlight, grill, drivers fender. and also crushed the fender back into the door making it unopenable.

about 2 weeks later and 2 weeks b4 the repair date the insurance assessor helped us open the door. he held the handle on the outside y we kicked it open from the inside. it made some funny noises those remaining weeks haha

As stated, the ones sitting still will tend to stay there and watch you go by, it's the ones on the move that will get you . I say GET YOU because the odds of the roo jumping into your path are directly proportional to your ability to pull up in time to avoid the impact so if you can't stop in time it's almost garenteed that the roo WILL jump in front of you at the last second no matter which way it's going as you approach.

Having said that, I haven't hit a roo in years in my car and manage to avoid them 99% of the time in the truck. I have VERY big spotlights and drive up the middle of the road whenever possable and use those cheap plastic whistlers which I find very affective.( obviously you still need to drive defensively as well). You couldn't pay me to put a Shoo Roo on my vehicles, they're dangerous IMO. They were designed to spook deer in North America not roos here and they put out such an intense burst that it scrambles the roos brain and they don't know which way is up so they just run round in circles till they hit something. I've lost count of the cars I've seem with Shoo Roos and major damage after hitting a skippy.

My experience with the Shu-Roo's was actually pretty good. Whether it was coincidence or not I am not sure. My experience certainly was demonstrably less near misses and no collisions in areas with high kangaroo activity.

I don't do the high country k's I used to ,so can't justify the cost or need for my new cars. I do have the whistles on the Subie and 'lane which do see some country work. That has worked well so far.

I got the whistles for $3.99 a pair from my local Repco.

These are the best $2 I ever spent to protect against roos,

....and,if you can find them, I think these type work much better than the single apperture post type as well plus they're low profile and don't look as dicky, I buy them a handful at a time so I've always got spares.

I'm sure there are plenty of people who'll say they don't work but I can tell you from experience that they do. I used to drive a refrigerated truck and deliver milk to the Eyre Peninsula so was on the road at 4am 4 days a week and after I put 4 of these on the front of my truck I didn't hit anything in over 2 years. I now do the mail run every night from Bathurst to Gulgong through Kandos/Rylston and Mudgee and still haven't hit anything. That's not to say you still don't have to be on your guard and drive defensively and take evasive action occasionally but before I put them on I used to hit roos at least once a week. Having said all that, my relief milk driver hit 7 roos in 4 trips while I was on holiday once much to my amazement and disgust but I rekon he was either blind and stupid or was actually aiming at them to manage that so I think it comes down to the driver and driving style alot too.

I got my last lot at a "Cheap as Chips" store in Pt Lincoln in SA but I did see some in a "Go Low" or "Reject Shop" in Mudgee a while back but I didn't need any so didn't pick them up. I'd say trawl all the local $1 shops in your area, one of them will probably have them. They don't always stock them that's why I'll grab 5 packs at a time when I find them. They get knocked off from time to time and it's nice to have spares.

Cant say what works and what doesnt, must have tried them all while living in Newman WA, little whistles on the front, flashing lights on/off, backing off/not backing off, air horns blaring etc etc... when they have there little minds set on dying and creating as much damage as they can in the process, they can be very determined.

Try not to lock up the brakes/wheels, and DONT try to swerve around them if you are getting along at a fair clip, you will probably end up on your lid while Skippy goes looking for another victim, seen the results of people doing both these and in most cases the injuries/damage would have been far less if they had just hit the dam thing.

SHORT STORY:
It was a dark cold night many years ago, approx 2am, 200kays North of Meekathara on the Great Northern Highway (WA) heading south, vehical was a KW900 Kenworth with two tri axle trailers, and the little whistles on the bull bar, speed around 110 :evil3: all of a sudden smack in the middle of the road (single lane) here comes Skippy flat out straight at me

: , so i let him have it all, lights, air horns and the little whistles on the bull bar etc etc, all to no avail im afraid, POP!!! the little critter went head first into the towing hitch on the bull bar.

I say pop because that was the noise he made when he exploded all over the front of the prime mover, jesus did it stink, how did we know he hit the tow hitch i hear you ask?? we found an eye ball embeded in it with the rest of the gore, also the vindictive so an so took out the LH little whistle, sniff!..

PS: If you are in Roo country try to avoid driving at night as most (not all!!) Roos prefer to keep out of the heat of the day, especially in the northern latitudes, but if you have to, try keeping the speed down, it has always helped me....

I believe it was Port Hedland (thats what I've been told by the guy who sent me the pics), for our eastern state counterparts, thats about half way up the coast of WA in the Pilbara region which is 600 kays south of Broome, so yes that makes it the Gt Northen H'way.

Sorry everyone, after looking at it more closely that does not look like a Roo hit, it looks more like someone steped on it, no blood, the lights still on the roof. The force seems to be to much on the down side and no roo is that heavy.

Reckon he was escorting overwidth/length load and ran up the clacker of it while having a moment, that might explain the tare in the LH guard, no roo will tare a panel like that.

not quite...if you look to the right of the middle of the screen, you can see a small red patch, looks like blood to me...also, nothing to say the bend in the quarter panel wasn't there before the accident...

No cop car in the country would be allowed to drive with the panel in that state....

Red patch could be anything, and going by the damage whatever hit it, hit it in the roof, the windscreen caved in in sympathy......

Well if the area described is right, the possibility of a roo hit is pretty damn high.

They are everywhere, especially at night.

The front quarter panel damage could be where the tail got caught.

True, roos are like flies up there, i lived in Newman/Tom Price for ten years, my brother still lives there, and neither of us have seen roos stomping on cars like that, seen similar damage to an XC, but he took the legs out from under a horse, blood and guts everywere.......

Tail caught in quarter panel, now i know your taking the p$$$.....

Front Guard isn't pulled back too far, roo could have easily managed to do that at impact.
I've seen a similar thing happen to a VX Commodore. Roo went from front to back leaving a bend in the front bumper, bonnet, roof, boot and finally removing the rear bumper on his dismount.

In the other photos I've received, it also shows the kangaroo with the car in the background. Looks real enough to me.

judging by the look of the road surroundings i cant see it being near Hedland. Good chance it was closer to exmouth or possibly the other way much closer to Broome. oh and please refer to Hedland in its relative distance to Karratha please... much better haha :P

oh and those questioning whether it was a roo still because there's no blood, they dont always explode. We hit one a few years back. a big bastard, ripped the roo bar off the front of the Land cruiser, pushed the front a few inches back destroying the radiator and bent the bonnet. not a single scratch on him. deffinitely dead tho. he started to bleed from the mouth when we moved him off the road. lucky were only 100km from closest roadhouse.
