Spot on.
Diesel was once a reasonable alternative to petrol engines in cars, however today they are incredibly expensive to purchase, maintain, and repair.

They are an absolute white elephant now (in cars).

Mines been alright, the only 'expensive' part of servicing has been that the oil filter costs like $25 from Ford.

And I've crapped out the engine mounts because my car is putting 35% more power to the wheels than when it was factory

Peter Mock and John German stumbled on this in the US. Kind of makes a mockery of the Germans.

Maybe this is Ferdinand Piëch having the last laugh? The one time VW overlord was forced off the board during a power struggle with Martin Winterkorn earlier this year. The timing and circumstances of all this are quite the coincidence.

As my signature says I worked in the automotive industry. Car companies regularly test rivals products. I wouldn't be surprised another brand tested the VW models and discovered the issue. Who they are and what were their motives is unknown.

Diesel is already under pressure to be phased out in many European cities, this will add impetus. It could actually be VW's unplanned gift to the environment and ultimately the end of diesel cars as Europe is the most significant market.

Europe strikes back:

more lols from the alternate financial blogs, a fella named 'Shpedly':

"VW has historically been the worst at maintaining correct emissions. Talk to any VW owner with a car over 5 years old. They will tell you, the check engine light coming on for some emission fault is never ending. Its such a joke, there is a "check engine light club". They sell the check engine light symbol on a sticker so that owners can put it on their rear window. Basically saying, "hey man, yeah my check engine light is on too". I know this because I own a shop that specializes in working on them going on 30 years.
Farfegnugin really means F&%kinbroken."

Thinking about it, I suspect the software went into another mode when it detected a device was plugged into the OBD connector. This connector is never used by the public and as such the car would operate in the 'normal mode' when driven by the general public and go into 'special mode' when the OBD connector had something plugged in during the emissions tests.

It is annoying to constantly listen to the news today hammering VW Australia. As Australian emissions standards are not as stringent as the US, I believe this is a non-issue for VW cars sold in Australia as they should be able to meet our ADRs. As to VW's credibility, that is another issue.

If that is the case with VW, then every car that is full OBD2 compliant will go into a diagnostic mode when it detects the particular interface. A lot of the running parameters go into a default baseline mode that is generally imperceptible.

An older analog would be the post leaded XF Falcon. It had a connector that needed to be bridged when doing base timing adjustments. This was so the spark control ECU was put into diagnostic mode so that it could retain the new base idle timing. I drove my one with the connector bridged for a while and couldn't for the life of me nut out why the car was running like a slug and the exhaust smelled so lean. I found the bridge by accident, removed it and all was well

From what I've read in Australia it will be more of an ACCC issue if they mislead consumers on their diesels being clean.

If VWA diesels comply with ADRs there is no misleading. All of their diesel models sold in Australia need to be rested to confirm this is correct.

Umm and 4x4's too? I wouldn't buy a petrol 4x4. Not one you plan to actually take off road or on any kind of decent road trips anyway.

Well I think petrol 4x4 is possibly a better way now days. Simplicity of diesels has long gone and in a way are more complex than petrols.
Expensive repairs on fuel systems with water contamination would be another reason modern diesels are losing the appeal for 4wds.
But just get an old mechanical injection 4be for pure simplicity and reliability IMO.

But the ACCC is looking into it because VW advertise that their diesels meet Euro6 emission standards, when in fact they are only meeting Euro5

Nah diesels make more sense in heavier vehicles or vehicles that tow. I guess it's a case of matching fuel to the type of use such as you don't see diesel airplanes or motorbikes.

In the early 90s Europe was buying as much diesels as Japan but stupid EU laws and incentives changed all that. Now you have relatively low population cities like Paris with massive smog problems even though they have half the population of Sydney.

well actually ..... if in fact the tricky car company was getting their good fuel results with the tricky software, and now the the software has to put right and car x suddenly uses more fuel than they where originally advertising , id say that would be misleading would it not ???

Nice drink was it?

True, Paris, Texas had a small population but its not in the EU. I do know of a city called Paris, France that has 12 million people in its metropolitan area. That's about half the population of Australia, never mind Sydney.

It used certain sensors in the car that would make it think it was being tested. Apparently the whole test takes 20 minutes and only drives about 4km.

You're forgetting in 1990s and early 2000s most petrol engines were mediocre at best. I've had a Peugeot 406hdi and now a BMW e46 320d and they both walk all over the 2.0 petrol 4 cylinder petrol alternatives, and the 2.2 & 2.5 i6 BMWs. The e46 330d pretty much blew the doors off any sedan at the time short of a decent V8. I will get 5.5-5.6 l/100km on a trip and currently averaging 6.7 mixture driving in the BMW so they were a better alternative to any similar petrol back then.
Fast forward the last 5 or so years and the petrol engine has come a long way... Kind of ironic considering the amount of money thrown at diesels and hybrids over the last 10 years.
We're looking at a new Polo for my mother, 1.2 turbo petrol and I think it is the most economical car on the market. Still, same story as a modern diesel, I would not want to own one of these late model DI turbo petrol out of warranty and I still look at the petrol engines claimed fuel use with doubt, especially if they are been worked hard, claimed fuel figures will be just a dream.

Why can't those Diesels say 5-years old, be tested/analysed, or have I misunderstood your comment ?

I distinctly remember saying that when we traded the Pajero in that I would never, EVER again own a diesel car or 4x4 and that supposed economy gains between diesel and petrol was a lie at best especially when you take into account more cash to maintain a diesel car. I also remember saying that I think diesel cars pollute more than the petrol equivalent to which I was shot down by 3 salespeople at the time and numerous users here.

To read this and not being a fan of VW it validates my opinions.

Where's my ancient Ford I6?
