But now someone "famous" has a similar situation and most people think he should get an exemption.

Honestly if I was this kid, I would ask for a 730Li. 7 Series is the most expensive BMW and the 6 cylinder is still P plate legal.
the aff member asked for advice and received it. some of it was good, some a little patronising. however the question was answered to the best of aff's ability even though aff is not the place to ask, if you want the correct answer and only the correct answer

not many are saying he should get an exemption as such, just that the laws allow an exemption. the rest of the pro tomic-m3 people here don't really care. he drives an m3 - good on him. to those that aren't allowed to drive one - boo hoo. wait a couple of short years, save your money and hey presto . . . legal m3 in the driveway

Hey has anyone else noticed that this car sounds suspicously like an M3 GTS? It is bright Orange, very loud etc... Surely not a regular standard M3?
I don't even know if M3 GTS's were bought out here, maybe they've dressed a regular M3 up and put on a fruity exhaust.
If they've given him a genuine GTS then he can get effed. That's bull****, no kid should be allowed one of those, or any other car that most grown men can only dream about... ;-)

im just thinking of how far up crap creek he'll be when he can't play tennis any more, no one wants to know him due to his ego and his body is struggling to keep up with his mind cause he pushed it to the limits in his youth oh and the good chance he could be pat rafter's replacement.... does he deserve an m3 yeah cause in his job he'll only be in the limelight for a short time compared to the average joe who works 9-5 and will be sitting pretty till he is 6 feet under.

Dude can you ask him if it's a GTS? :-)
Some news sites are running this story with a pic of a GTS...

They made some RHD examples.

It is highly unlikely he's got a GTS, but not impossible.

I am curious as to what it is tho!

It might be an M3 'Competition' with a wrap...

You can wrap it or custom order an M3 in orange. You can't register a GTS here and who cares what he drives he hasn't even been caught doing anything wrong. Do you have any idea how hard he's trained throughout his life to get through Wimbledon at 18.

You could register a GTS here - it's not wildy different to an M3.

Irrelevant of course coz it's unlikely to be a GTS but still, just sayin'

No GTS's were sold here, or imported AFAIK.

If its a car bought by BMW for him they could get whatever custom paint they wanted, they do a range of special order colours. And i'm sure BMW Australia would have access to a range of colours the general public can't get.

it's not about jealousy.

it's about consistency of the law.

if tomic can drive an m3, then anyone of any age should eb able to drive anything. there should be no restrictions.

So what we have here is a marketing campaign where a young high profile celebrity has been associated with a sponsor's lead product, a BMW M3.

As part of that marketing campaign in addition to photographs of the celebrity with the product the celebrity has to be seen in public using the product while travelling to and from events.

Nett results:

1) A few do gooders are aghast that a young person could be allowed to drive this car as part of his job despite it being legal and not against the spirit of the law concerned.

2) A few recent and current P platers are quite upset that he is allowed to drive a vehicle that they are/were not and in what can only be described as pathetic jealousy clearly demonstrate that the law restricting access to high performance equipment from drivers of low experience or levels of mental maturity has merit.

3) BMW and Bernard Tomic have gained far more free publicity than they could possibly hope for from the media beating up the angst of the two above groups.

I suspect both BMW and Bernard Tomic's manager are very happy with this campaign.......

either you don't want to get it or are deliberately being obtuse to what most people on here are saying. the law was drafted because the government said anyone on P plates is more likely to die in a high powered car, hence why they should not be allowed to drive them. just because he is a tennis player with a fat bank account does not mean he is less likely to die then anyone else.

there are over a dozen other vehicles in the BMW stable that are all P PLATE LEGAL.

2) A few recent and current P platers are quite upset that he is allowed to drive a vehicle that they are/were not and in what can only be described as pathetic jealousy clearly demonstrate that the law restricting access to high performance equipment from drivers of low experience or levels of mental maturity has merit.

turning something into a "jealously" thing is just a pathetic deflection from the core argument that he is 19 driving an M3. being able to afford one, or being sponsored by them, is totally irrelevant to the argument. the argument is a 19 yo driving an m3, which the plebs are continually being told when on your P's and driving one you will bring about the four horsemen of the apocalypse.

3) BMW and Bernard Tomic have gained far more free publicity than they could possibly hope for from the media beating up the angst of the two above groups.

probably, but had he been not driving a car thats clearly illegal to anyone without cash and connections we would'nt be discussing this
