40K, here's a fully valued Classic:

https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/pete...gon/1299909181

The young one partook in an excellent early Disco 1 - with the blue Jasper Conran interior - during covid at a price well under 10, he's done very well as these are now rising in price. The drivetrain - 3.9 Rover EFI V8 and automatic, is actually really endearing. It's more fun driving a slow car fast while making enormous noise and rolling heavily, or something like that.

Offroad these things (the disco got the RR Classic chassis as well) are really quite beautiful - they momentum along and keep their wheels on the ground. Having had Tojos during my working remote days, I rate the LR coils, centre diff locks. Also, it's thoughfully engineered, with clever stuff like putting the alternator as high as possible. Lots of fun. I'd love a RR Classic but I fear that ship has sailed for my buying habits (7-8K, at bottom of depreciation curve, V8, rare/collectable/aus muscle or related has been very successful). Compared to the drug money being asked for the 80 series TDs during Covid, the Disco was an inspired choice. But I reckon that RRC is a bit pricey, maybe I'm wrong.

Very tidy low kms L67 - my pick of engine for this entire generation of Holden.
being VXII, it actually came with a working rear suspension, as a bonus

What do you reckon Franco?

Horrible engine that one, severely underpowered for what it is. I've owned a fair few Holdens and that one would be the last one i'd own. Looks beautiful and well cared for though, love seeing nice, clean, honest cars.

That's way too clean for me, I wouldn't own a car that clean because it wouldn't stay that way.

Keen, but not for me

I fixed one of those with a starting problem - fuel pump check valve crapped out on the factory pump, would turn over a few more cycles, before firing up because the fuel would drain back to the tank after the pump primes on ignition.

Yeah in factory spec or even with a few mods, they're boat anchors, the supercharger is too small for the displacement of the super mang, the moment you put a smaller pulley on it, turns into a hair drier.

Its a good platform for a turbo conversion though, in factory spec that bottom end is pretty strong, you'd just need to chuck the Ecotec heads, fuel rail and intake manifold on it because the L67 has the injector ports located in the heads.

You probably still could use the L67 heads with the ecotec intake manifold but you'd need to block off the injector ports.

The earlier Buick version of that V6 was a 13 second car in the 1980s, Buick Grand National GNX - factory turbo.

So one assumes the L67 had the opportunity to not be such a boat anchor considering they did something way better nearly 20 years prior.

Wasn't that long ago LTD's, Fairlanes and Statesmans were worth nothing until most of the regular sedans disappeared from sales.

There were 2 ex white hire ones local to me recently, started out out $6000 for the pair ended up selling for $3000, one was perfect one was in reasonable condition. Just didn't need anymore stuff.

Saw them hit 35k, so that is a proper steal AND the buyer got 2 of them.

I get the "Just didn't need anymore stuff", partly why I just kept watching if I'm honest

Well according to my spreadhseet i will have racked up $31k all inclusive on the Accord at the moment...LOL

But I honestly dont know what else I would get for that money and spec that was newish...also has average 8.5L/100 which I am happy enough with given how I generally drive it.

Accord Euro R is good value these days, it's about what a DC5 Integra Type R/Type S was going for 15 years ago.

DC2R are going for the $40K-$50K mark these days which is ridiculous, but I'm not sure the rules of physics apply any more

If you were going to spend that $40K-$50K mark on something Japanese surely it would be JZX100 Chaser or a nice R33 Skyline GTS-T.

Sub $30K buys JZS161 Aristo and JZS171 Crown

Can't believe the prices of 1990s/00 JDM these days, I guess they're Millennial hero cars.

Yeah its nuts. I got the car itself for $24k and they seem to be rising pending condition etc. I also have a red one which seems rarer than the other colours.

I do like a chaser but unless for spending 40-50k then their had to find. Also the other cars noted are either to old or dont come in a manual and I didnt want a turbo for track stuff. Cant wait to get these brakes done, its really the weak link of the car (a few more Nm's would be nice but its enough for me to get in trouble).

I'm not sure if you could get that registered in VIC, I'm not sure we recognise interstate mod plates.

I reckon just take her in for a RWC and over to VicRoads for the inspection of engine number, they won't know the difference between a 335 series or a 385 series engine, they couldn't find the engine number on my 7 series so they didn't bother with the check and my F100 got through the keeper with a different engine number

Have you ever tried to sell something on Marketplace?

If i put $20k they would offer 10k

The 40k was following the rules of the OP

Yeah standard marketplace behaviour, you advertise five figures above what you actually want then 'negotiate' down

No more Euro cars for me bud, one was enough

The Mazda 121 is interesting, its the piston engine variation of the Mazda Cosmo, seems super cheap, would be a good engine conversion prospect.

Aristo is a good value buy, its an alternative to a BA XR6 Turbo.

I'd rather the BA XR6 Turbo to be honest as its a bit less complex and the Aristo engine bay would give any auto tradie PTSD but the values of Falcons are ridiculous.

Look at Ford's fetish for circles and ovals during their 'New Edge' design language era - circles within circles within ovals within circles.
