It's actually a good topic. Not necessarily original, but not a bad one to dust off.

I don't have the luxury of a suite of cars (maybe when the kids all leave home) but the cars I love are mostly old skool. To each their own, some people like cars they can plug their laptop into like some video game, I prefer things I can see and touch. Where your timing involves a screw-driver and a timing light, and "emission control" means not farting in the car.

Lets see, I drive my TE50 daily. It cost less than/about the same as a low km 2011 FG XT when I got it. It has;

5 seats
A V8
Uniqueness
IMO still contemporary styling..its aged better than just about every other car of its era
Anyone who knows anything about cars will drop the odd compliment

Its so good in fact other than wanting something newer I find it hard to justify buying anything else to replace it unless its more practical.

As I own it outright I dont need to drop $40k on something thats worth half of that in two years time, actually Im going to be pretty unlucky if I cant flog it off for what I paid for it.

I can also turn up to car shows with something interesting and you dont see them every day (im yet to see another T1/2 in Brisbane).

So the only downside is the fuel..but that comes with the territory (oh and the stupid QLD rego amount for V8's).

I desperately want a Fx XR6T, for me the ultimate last falcon, but being objective I cant really justify it. I mean imagine if I spent even a 1/4 of that on some mods for the TE!

So why would I get something more "modern"?

Very nice old car but even my AU might even disappear down the straight from that old v8 and have more horsepower.

There old and then there is just functionally inferior. The au is a good blend of an old car with a few of the modern must haves, efi, decent performance, air cond, abs, power steering!! Lol. Most importantly you can actually find parts for them.

I enjoy going on a cruze in my XM, It reminds me of the "good old days", my youth, and the new XK Falcon that I learnt to drive in. I also have an 84 Rodeo Ute, crude, no power but great fun on the rough dirt roads around here, slides, wheel spins, and all over the place under brakes, never a dull moment!

I even enjoy working on both of them. I can fix everything myself, except the auto in the Falcon, and I don't need a stack of special tools and a hoist.

But if I have a long journey to make, I take the Territory every time.

IMO driving a car that is older than 10 or so years is old.

I do not enjoy driving older cars. Driving the VH SLE we have feels bad. Bad suspension, bad steering, bad everything.

Then we go to the 2002 VX its better but not as good as a FG.

The VX is similar to driving my BA GT.

I think for some people the novelty of driving a older car, pushes reality out the window and they make up things in their mind to justify why they drive older cars.

No made up justification. the number of people that stare, come ask questions and have a chat because of the old car is not made up. Nor is the Accepted risk in not making my destination, getting killed in a fender bender having to repair rust and dodgy electrics and waiting for months to find parts. None of that is made up to justify why I have an old car. I have a new car too so that I ca drive when the others are not appropriate, needing attention or Im just lazy and want to be left alone. I have a middle aged car too which is a nice blend of the two.

I think this is a fair view to have.

But Im not saying that older cars are better or more comfortable, or quicker etc.

But they present a good base for customisation, improvement, better for a hobby.

Newer cars only require that you steer, all the other fun car stuff is lost.
