Victoria records 10 new locally acquired cases - attempts to thieve NSW zombies as Victorian

Yesterday there were 10 new local cases reported, 2 cases internationally acquired and in hotel quarantine. Thanks to all who were tested, 18,337 results were received.

Of the 10 local cases reported, 2 have already been announced yesterday by NSW. These 2 cases were tested in NSW but are Victorian residents and so are being managed by Victoria.

NSW couple flee officers at Melbourne Airport after being told they will need to isolate.

The pair disembarked a flight from Canberra just before 11am on New Year's Day.

"The pair then ran from the officer, fleeing the airport and were picked up by a vehicle outside."

The 26-year-old man and 24-year-old woman normally reside in NSW are believed to be in the Sunbury area.

Yes, a great job by all down there. 6+ months Covid-19 free is a fantastic result.

Speaking of Covid-19 in Tasmania, remind me again why and where that last cluster originated from?

Oh... is that what your local government/media was reporting at the time?

We on the mainland were told something different. Articles below from April this year during the last outbreak in Tasmania.

How strange that even the locals weren't made aware of the origins of the cluster in Tasmania?

Truth be told, the Vic border is not really 100% enforceable either. There are 30 odd "main" roads going in and out being manned. But there are numerous other back roads. Caradvice has 58 listed (https://www.caradvice.com.au/865720/...der-crossings/).

But I heard its something like 70 odd if you have a 4x4.

Vic does not have the resources to man them all 24/7. We need help....but its not coming....so we do the best we can....then cop the blame .

We were well aware that the Multiple cases on the Nth West in April were from the cruise ship,but,the most recent a couple of weeks back weren’t related to those.

How about asking the ADF for help? Surely they can spare VIC a few hundred personnel to help with manning all the border crossings?

A couple of weeks back?? You mentioned 6 months free of Covid-19. Now it's only a couple of weeks back?

We on the mainland have not heard of this new cluster in Tasmania. Have you made the authorities aware that there's community transmission which was started by "people of Indian decent"? Community transmission is bad enough, but if it's from people of Indian decent then that makes it even worse.. yeah?

If you're referring to returning travellers who are in hotel/home quarantine that have tested positive, and the authorities are well aware of, that is irrelevant. It's not community based transmission. Which is key. Every State and Territory in Australia is currently dealing with overseas arrivals who have tested positive and are in quarantine. Even people of Indian decent, so you have nothing to be "outraged" about.

Data valid as at 00:00 GMT January 1st, 2021.

Note: As not all Australian States report at the same time, the data below is based on the previous full day reporting.

22 new cases for Australia and no deaths so the CMR is 3.198%. NSW recorded 5 cases, Victoria recorded 8 and SA recorded 4.

No new cases and no deaths for NZ so CMR is 1.156% and active cases 49.

The UK had 53,285 cases yesterday and 1,099 deaths.

Just over 234k new cases in the USA yesterday and 3,539 deaths sees CMR fall to 1.732% and active cases at 39% with the raw numbers rising and now over 7.9M. Note that the USA is actually minus one day due to time differences.

Other notable points: (with limited reporting yesterday)
Global cases pass 84M with the last 1M in 2 days;
Global cases set a new daily high of 745,018 (31/12);
The USA completes 254M, India 173M, Russia 91M and Israel 8M tests.

Only -
Ireland (1,753);
UAE (1,856); and
Japan (4,091);

...
recorded new daily highs; those in blue for the second consecutive day and those in red for a third or more consecutive day.

Just checked, and you are correct.

Minister for Defence Linda Reynolds has stated that the reason VIC was not offered the requested ADF personnel was due to bushfire preparation.

With all of the bushfires that are yet to ignite - given the extreme hot and dry conditions (droughts even), across the country, I think this is a fair decision. ADF personnel would be more helpful fighting these huge bushfires that are yet to ignite, than man borders to help prevent a third wave in VIC. Which, if it happens, would probably destroy the local governments chances of re-election.

Too little too late don't you think? And only in the hot zones?? What's the point of that?

So... it's raining here, but there's no need for an umbrella. Tick, tock. Almost everyone here is now already soaking wet. Ok then, now you can ALL start to use an umbrella. Tick, tock. It's starting to rain everywhere else now. But they also don't have to use an umbrella. Let's just wait until almost everyone is soaking wet, then start using an umbrella.

Yep. Makes perfect sense.

Reactive. Not proactive.

Hang on a minute, last year the ADF said they are NOT allowed to fight bushfires.

The states were advised in September that the ADF was not going to deploy to borders and it was up to them to manage if they wanted to close borders. Unlikely that they will deploy unless we see a massive outbreak where it is beyond the capabilities of the states to handle.

The ADF is preparing for floods and cyclones more so than bushfires this year. They actually just deployed to Fiji after they got smashed by a Cat 5 cyclone.

I said cluster. Not returning overseas travellers. Two children and their mother testing positive (December 09) in quarantine does not equate to a cluster.

Well well...this is interesting.

You have the Murdoch gang blaming the "new variant" on the UK......then you have other media outlets suggesting the "new variant" was in the US since last October. It has rarely been mentioned that the "new variant" was linked to a Brazil strain.

Nah won't happen as it was Victorian issue and they are in NSW now, by the way the courts are too soft especially when a sob story will be given.
Look how most of the lockdown fines in Vic have been rescinded recently, that tells you how soft govco is.
Cheers.
