Default removing AU steering wheel. What size torx screw?

looked all over local town and cant find a 5 sided torx key set. Bought a kit today for $50 though and has torx (tamper) T7 through to T40. Do i need a bigger one for the mainn big one that bolts the wheel in place?

No, the big Torx screw that holds the steering wheel in place is just a standard 6 sided Torx screw head.

it's not a tamperproof torx, just normal torx
the size is T50 for the centre bolt.
most auto parts shops sell a set of Torx sockets cheap enough.

Ive got a 6 sided torx key set for the big one then, but not a tempered set with the small bore in it for the small ones.

When you undo the big main one leave it threaded on a bit so when you give the wheel a massive yank to get it off it doesnt come flying at your face.

You need a steering wheel puller, again these can be sorced from any of the auto shops but if you are handy with your tools you can make one. See the 2 threaded holes that are about 2-3cm away from the main bolt (on a 45degree angle) you use them to pull the steering wheel againist the main bolt/ bolt hole. You get a piece of flat 6mm+ thick metal and drill 2 holes in the plate to match those 2 threaded holes. You then use 2 screws and screw this plate to the steering wheel (sorry can't rember the size of the screw). Lastly you make one larger hole that lines up with where the middle Torx bolt is. Get a 10mm or 12mm bolt and nut, place the bolt through the hole and put the nut between the steering wheel and the plate metal. As to do the nut and bolt up you will feel the centre bolt pushing on the main middle Torx screw and because the metal plate is fixed to the steering wheel with the 2 screws on the outside it will begin to feel the wheel pulling away from the main column. If it is not moving you can give the centre bolt a tap with a hammer as the steering wheel is tampered onto the column. It has to be alot better than using a jack off your dash. If you want you can buy a steering wheel remover from and auto shop and save on damaging anything, they can't be more than $30-$40.

Steering puller won't always work either. spray some wd down the shaft and leave it for a while then work the wheel from all angles ie front to back and side to side and wrigle the hell out of it and try the puller to if it won't buge. when i got my momo from the wreckers we couldn't get it off at all and broke the puller to. the wrecker ended up pulling the whole colum out and managed to get it off.

Well I was either a) super lucky or b) amazingly strong as mine came off in about 30 seconds with a couple of good yanks.

Maybe do as above and put some WD40 or something over the bolt. It will come off without the need for a steering wheel puller - no point buying a tool you will likely only ever use once.

I did hear something break a little earlier, under the tilt column stuff, something white which i found a few little pieces of on the floor

What else have you got to loose?

I found pulling one side of the wheel, then trying the otherside and just alternating between both sides worked best for me (as blownv8au also said). I also bent the original steering wheel but managed to knock it back into shape without damaging the leather.

i hang off my steering wheel like a monkey and it came off without any force whatsoever. i also modified the 5-sided torx bolts to accept a flathead screwdriver lol.

I have a tecnique I have used successfully on the older spline type ones which can really be a Bugger. It is to bang the wheel rim with your fists (not knuckles but base of hand) alternately side by side. So you are infact applying the opposite force to pulling back towards you. Sometimes it will just "pop" straight off when doing this - other times you have to do it while applying pressure with a puller.

Put the bolt on a little and give it a good smack from behind either side with your palms, it's what I always do.

Well, i eventually i got it off, popping veins and developing a brain anurism. Kept turning the steering wheel and yanking that mother******. I sprayed WD on it yesterday and this morning and smashed the bolt threaded in a little a few times this arvo with a hammer. Put on the fairlane wheel and a new momo gear knob. Short shifter come shortly so should drop the stick height about 2 inches.

I hate night photos with a flash, shows all little imperfections and dirt.

Nice wheel that one. Should wrap the woodgrain bits in carbon fibre, would look mint.

where do you get the carbon fibre inserts from? or is it an aftermarket product? I like the marble on the BA wheels, that would be sweet if you could get that.

I forgot to mention that i broke the top holes allocated for the cruise control buttons. I should have put those bigger screws in first to pull the rear plastic shroud up flush with the wheel. Not doing that i snapped the plastic threaded holes. However, the bottom ones are screwed in and the groove that the cruise control buttons slip over are still holding them in place and still locked on place by the wheel. Got a little impatient. Ah well. done now.

Bought the wheel from Ride. Cheers Andrew

Great to see it on there after the struggle with removing the old one, when I originally removed it a couple years back I don't remember having too much trouble once I actually removed the center bolt!
