Default How To Change Diff Oil

Hi Guys,

Just posted a "how to" change diff oil.

Its great having pictures of what exactly you are talking about.
G.K. you should think about working for Haynes or Gregories !!!!!
Just a quick note about IRS V8's, the damn filler plug is at the side ( rather than back of diff ) and the exhaust runs close by so you can't use the the 1 litre pack with the refill hose. You have to use a small hand pump with extension hose on it to get the Diff oil back in

yeah, i was gonna say, im due for a diff oil change soon when i finish running the diff in, so will post the IRS addition, or email to GK so he you can update him.. us IRS's have the diff mounted to the car , so you cant jack it up there, and as said before, the filler plug is in different locations

Just about to change the oil in my diff so it was great to see your pics and guide.

I was thinking of putting an additive in mine when i change it, did it make any difference in yours?

Well worth it if you do, Chris from Bluepower gave me a small bottle 250ml i think, as he noticed clunking from the diff. After adding it no more noise. Penrite was the brand.

I used Nulon G70, but have been driving the wagon all weekend, so after an 84km round trip to work and back tomorrow, I'll have the answer! LOL!

You have to use the fully synthetic diff oil in the IRS diffs and they specifically say don't use any additives

what does it achive cleaning the isc valve and can you use wd40 or does it have to be carby cleaner??

Cleaning it can smoothe out a rough idle. I don't think Wd40 would dislodge the deposits, but I may be wrong. I thought it was more of a lubricant than a cleaner.

GK i had a quick browse and couldnt find how you removed the old oil..
ive seen it done before and i think you undo the bottom bolt a little or something??

yeah .... undo the bottom bolt .... also pour new fluid through it until it starts coming out clean through the bottom bolt hole ... then put bolt back in.

thats some great work there George! ever the handy man with the camera! may i just ask, where abouts would one get said oil and addative and how much will it set me back? my car is due for a service soon so i might as well take advantage of it being up on the hoist and do the diff too.

SuperCheap is where I got the diff oil and the additive. From memory the oil was about $18 for 2 x 1 litre bottles and the additive was about $6ish I think.

Castrol SAF XA was $30 a litre and needs 1.65 lires in IRS diff.
I bought it it at Repco at the lat 20% off sale so total was $48 for 2 litres.

What is the additive used for???
Also my diff whines a fair bit, what oil / additive should i use to quieten it down a tad???

my car has done 150,000 clicks does the oil need to be changed? i reckon it would need changing!

Depends when the last time it was changed, if it has done that many klms with out be changed that is :

Most blokes here do the transmission oil and filter change every year or 20,000 odd kays.

You don't have to, but as I said in the "how to" I do, to avoid the overflow.

Many people leave the diff as is and when the oil comes back out the fill hole, they know it's full. The only problem with that as I see it, is if they have their car on an incline, they might not be able to get the correct amount of fluid back into the diff.

Also, having had the stink of diff oil (one of the worse smells there is IMO) on me for a day, I prefer the minimum amount of spillage.

Suit yourself though, whatever works, works!

As long as you have the proper amount go back in, that's the main thing.
