I think this is a myth.

Plenty of Toyotas break down. Plenty of other marques go the journey.

100%. Toyota are reaping the rewards of building some reliable cars in the past, however these days they are simply cashing in on that reputation rather than adding to it. They are no better or worse than anyone else.
