Mazda3 and Holden Commodore have been dominating 2011's monthly sales charts, but Toyota's small car has made a surprise return to the top in September.

Toyota's Corolla has made a surprise return to the top of the sales charts, according to the latest industry sales figures.

The Japanese small car was the best-selling vehicle in September, as sales of the perennial front-runners the Holden Commodore and Mazda3 both slipped during the month.

toyota sold 3766 Corollas in September compared with 3712 Commodores and 2703 Mazda3s. The Corolla last topped monthly sales in January.

Advertisement: Story continues below A rare disappointing month for Mazda saw its overall sales drop 32 per cent compared to September 2010. The Mazda3 was August's most popular car with buyers but last month it was also outsold by the Holden Cruze (3117) and Toyota Hilux (3191).

The majority of Japanese brands continue to register a fall in sales as they recover from March's tsunami. Subaru and Suzuki recorded September declines of about 20 per cent, with Mitsubishi down 10 per cent and Honda continuing its woes with a 29 per cent drop.

Toyota (up 7.4%) and Nissan (up 25.7%) were two rare exceptions in September, with Toyota's luxury brand Lexus achieved an impressive 89% growth to bring its year on year performance to neutral.

Another 3000-plus result for the Cruze means Holden's sedan and Commodore large car accounted for nearly two-thirds of the local car maker's sales in September.

It was another mixed month for Ford. Falcon sales again dropped, by 25 per cent in September, meaning its 1708 sales were almost matched by the Volkswagen Golf (1664). But some of the blue oval's European imports continue to shine. The Fiesta city car, with 1203 sales, fell just shy of the Mazda2, while the Mondeo medium car jumped 47 per cent for the month.

US car maker Chrysler continues to struggle with the Chrysler brand itself in Australia, down 66 per cent for the month and 35 per cent year on year, though Dodge and Jeep both increased sales by more than 100 per cent compared to September 2010 (up 173% and 101% respectively).

Australia's vehicle market grew 2.1 per cent compared to September 2010 but the market continues to fall short of last year's sales performance, down 3.7 per cent year to date.

Could be mining and construction, I'm seeing a lot more "branded" Navaras around the traps and at auction over here.

Then again it could also be pent-up demand for that new 550i Navara that has been released.

Sure are, should be a bucket load of them by now, saw some Chubb and Tesltra fleet vehicles, also demo units. Sales should pick up over the coming months too.

Focus sales continue to dissapoint globally. I wonder if this is one of the disadvantages of One Ford, global models which dont become a hit in any one particular market. The Astra/Cruze combintation appears to work as will the Sonic (Barina)/Corsa. Too put it in perspective Cruze sold 27,000 units last month in the US compared to 10,000 Focus. Fiesta too hasnt hit the sweet spot probably because outside of Europe people in Asia and US want sedans and the compromised Fiesta sedan styling based on the European hatch isnt working.

I wonder if we will eventually see the windback of One Ford and see Europe and Rest of World models like what GM, Toyota and Honda does.

I knew someone would pick that up, yes its shy about 300 or so but thats ok, LPi will gear up soon enough, I dont think it was really available for these figures, not fully anyway.

Also the new focus should be doing better aswell, but that was released last month too.

I would be more concerned about next months figures.

Give it time, the numbers for tezza and ecolpi will come up, I dare say the FG2 will see the XR's numbers rise substantially too, and the reintroduction of the XR8 would help boost sales considerably.
Finally, a change of prime minister likely at the end of the year (according to Graham Richardson) should help to instill a bit more confidence in the economy and business.

Sorry, but there's a lot of instability and uncertaintly, exacerbated by the carbon tax. People aren't spending money. We have a 2 speed economy, and like retail, the automotive industry is suffering with people being cautious with their money.

Many senior people within the ALP have publicly said that we are to get a new old PM who will drop the carbon tax which will hopefully restore some confidence to the economy.
I'm really trying to avoid this being political, but the deadline for the legislation which is causing an awful lot of doubt is next week, and if it fails then we get a new old PM.

Just got my FG 1 tonner work car delivered last month and it was even built Sept 2011.

i believe the camry is included in the medium segment even though its the same size as aurion. will the ecoboost falcon become a mid size car also??

good effort by camry i guess but it highlights the amount of people (or fleets?) that just want a mode of transport for a-b.

I think they have 3.9% finance at the moment, one local dealer has touring edtions with 17 inch alloys, black leather, reverse camera for $27990. I think the run-out deals on them must be helping.

actually 3.9% finance is a pretty good deal by toyota. just saw a holden ad saying all cars from (i forget the month) will get 5yr warranty and 5yr roadside assist.

to me, this seems better than trying to make your car stand out. nearly every car on offer in the market today is a very good car, and incentives like this will probably work better than trying to sell it on merit. the difference between a commodore and falcon is very small, but 5yrs instead of 3yrs warranty is probably enough to tip it in its favour.

its long overdue for the aussie guys. the imports have had up to 5yr warranties for a while now.

So, with using illogical emotion explain the difference between a camry/aurion and a XT/G6 with respect to a family of 4 who need a reasonable family car?

not sure what you're after there? you did read the last line of my post i assume. if you have no emotional attachment and just need a reasonable sized family car, i'm sure the camry is great value. it also has the toyota badge on the front which says 'trouble free motoring' to many people.

i wasn't really having a crack at the car itself, but being a ford forum, the camry isn't exactly held in high regard. its seen as an appliance.

Hmmm... I smell a rat! You could say that Commodore is consistently statistically holding its own, so what happened to Mazda??? Did a ship or two misplace their way to Australia last month or did Mazda push through forward (future) sales to only sacrifice this months sales volume???

Didn't Toyota do a finance deal on the Corolla's a while ago which really boosted their sales........

I read somewhere that Volvo provide a 5 year warranty and you can also extend that by three years. Thats 8 years factory warranty. I was impressed.

You can't add Territory figures to Falcon figures...now, more than ever, they are completely different cars aimed at completely different market segments. The Commodore is one model, as is the Falcon.

I was surprised by the low sales figures of the Falcon...the Commodore does do an amazing advertising job, far better than Ford does with the Falcon. I've seen endless TV ad's for Focus, Mondeo, but nothing for the Falcon apart from the odd dealer-funded advert on some sale or other.

The Corolla is no surprise...it's a great car. It's a decent size now, good on the highway, and well-equipped. The Camry is still simply a "lump of car"...reliable, comfortable, powerful enough...but hardly exciting. Good finacing and sharp pricing means for people who simply want "a car" they will go for a known quantity like Toyota reliability.

If we'd have bought purely with our head and taken a little more time, there would probably be a VW Golf TDi in the driveway or a Mondeo diesel...even though it's just me and the missus now, we decided that we'd always had big cars pretty much, and really only considered the Falcon and Commodore, and it came down to a coin toss and who gave a better trade in deal as to which to buy.

A lot of buyers however nowadays spend a long time deciding what to buy...it's hard now, as it's pretty difficult to actually buy a "bad car"...they're all good, some better than others, but none that you should actively avoid like the plague enough to make thier sales figures plunge dramatically.

My point was that the majority of Ford Falcon buyer also just want transport.

There is a small core of enthusiasts who buy FPV/XRT and possibly G6ET who do so because they enjoy the art of driving but those models make up a small percentage of Falcons sold.

And really there is just as much excitement on this forum perhaps even more about a LPG engine that costs less to run or a diesel Terri than an entry level supercharged V8.

I dont care if I "cant" combine, the only thing that matters is the number of Falcons and Territories going down the line. Local vs local is what matters and Ford need X amount to be profitable, if its equal to or greater than previous months then thats half the battle.

The commy includes the sportswagon, which is an indirect competitor to the Terry whether its "official" or not. Hence the inclusion.
