bunker oil is a name that is commonly used for it but it's correct name is heavy fuel oil. If I never see this stuff again it will be too soon it's a pain to clean off and it stinks

It's funny that none of the pictures linked in the article show an engine with 14 cylinders. I saw this thing circulate about 7 years ago when I started my engineering course.

I wonder more about the credibility of this every time I see it raise it's head again. I'm sure it's spectacular, but I wonder about the details.

Thanks for that. I just did a little more looking and found the manufacturers website, with details of the 14cyl.

I just hate the way these sort of things tend to be embellished before they are passed on, not that it needs to sound any more spectacular than it already is.

Bunker(s) are nothing more than the name given to a ships fuel tanks which can hold coal, diesel or heavy fuel oil(HFO), dependent on the propulsion type. (Not so much coal these days)

A point to note, some ships carry bunker Diesel/HFO AND cargo Diesel/HFO, it’s important for the loading and unloading to know which is which...

Also when replenishing (topping up the fuel tanks) it's called bunkering...

Another interesting point about the ships these engines go in is they don't have a gearbox as such, to go astern the engine is stopped then restarted in reverse rotation.........unless it has a CPP that is, but that is a whole different kettle of fish....

They also use the air start to blow over the engine prior to ignition as a test by leaving the indicator cocks open and the fuel pumps jacked off...
One ship i was on had a V16 Stork Werkspoor (now Wartsila) that blew oil out of the #5 Indicator cocks when in pre-start on a regular basis, it wasn't until we put a boroscope down the injector port that we realised the piston crown (oil cooled) was cracked into three pieces. It still ran ok, it just made a hell of a mess on pre-start when it blew a 100 litre's or so of oil all over the engine room.....GREASER!! CLEAN THAT UP NOW!!

2 ltr turbos are a lot of cubes in some applications, you see lots of harley riders talking about their cubes, and they equal a lot less then 2 litres.

Exactly imagine how much weight a Hybrid/Solar Fuel system would add to the ships already HUGE weight?!
