Default Ford Edge spotted

Just spotted a 2014 Ford Edge here in Townsville. It was left hand drive, had American number plates but unfortunately went passed in the opposite direction so i didn't see any more than that. We do have a contingent of US soldiers here on exercise so it's possible they may have brought it with them. I will keep an eye out and try to get some pics.

I know that in NT, US soldiers have a special dispensation to do this. Might have been based up there but moved to Townsville, or still up there but on R&R?

They are a nice car, definitely considering as a replacement for the wife's Territory in the next few years.

When in the US last year I saw a bucket load of them and actually thought they were a decent looking car. Didn't look any further into it.

Are they immune to our traffic laws? If so, I'm joining the US Corps

If they own their car for more than 12 months, they are allowed to bring it over and I think they can even sell it here. The 12 month thing is so they can't make money out of importing cars.

I'm sure there is more to it than that, but I think it was a way of getting American cars in Australia, and potentially without conversion.

I have seen many late model LHD american cars on the road over the yaers here in Melbourne apparently if they have enough coin and aren't planning on selling the car and take it back after they can bring the car here but apparently have to ship it back after the visa or whatever the deal is. I got told was something to do with moving costs shipping vs buying new car local.
