Is my transmission gasket on backwards???

I took some photos of my "damp" trans yesterday while I had the car up, and just noticed this...

See those two bits poking out? I think it's been put on the wrong way around. One side has a single bolt in the middle, the other has two bolts. Here's the new gasket I have:

I don't think it's the cause of the leak, but still, if it is on backwards it seems like a pretty silly mistake. The last person to replace that gasket would have been an employee of a transmission specialist!

its upside down... the gasket sits into the pan, you can hold the bolts with the gasket.... nfi how hard that was to put on wrong :(

That's what I was wondering, whether it was just put on the wrong side, or whether it was actually installed upside down... which means the grooves of the gasket won't mate properly with the metal surfaces.

It also means that the screws on each side would have pulled the two metal tabs closer than normal because there's no gasket in the middle...

It's been a while since I had the transmission service but I'm going to email them anyway, just to let them know.

Got a shot from the driver's side of the car... this side features a single gasket tab and two metal tabs. It's definitely not installed correctly!

I hope they haven't bent any of the metal trying to get the bolts in.

Oh thats a neat trick, you would think they would of noticed when the sump was harder to put on then normal.

It looks like it is on wrong, but I have seen and used gaskets that come with extra holes so they must fit other models as well. Made me think twice but they did fit my box and still had extra tabs hanging out.

Maybe ask the question politely and avoid getting egg on your face.

That's what I thought at first, that maybe it was a multi-model gasket with extra bits, but I can't see any sign of a gasket tab between any of the 3 bolt flanges on the sides.

Will know for sure when I take it off in a week or two to service my trans...

Which way is the gasket supposed to face anyway? I don't trust this one!

there are some cheaper aftermarket gaskets that are identical on either side so you cant put them around the wrong way in that photo you have of your replacement gasket the side that is facing up goes towards the transmission

the extension housing to the Auto gasket is also a common point for a bit of seepage, usually negligable, but annoying, a spray can of degreaser while wearing some safety glasses(that stuff blows back into your eyes) to clean it up and a bit of time to sus out where the leak/s are coming from is the go.

I had a reply back and he said that the gasket is fine, it is not installed incorrectly. For clarification I asked him to confirm that the gasket has 3 tabs on each side.

As far as the leak goes, there's no spotting on my driveway and when I checked the fluid level the other day the filler hole started leaking as soon as I pumped a bit more fluid in... so the fluid level is correct too. I'm not really worrying about it for the moment, it has been "damp" for at least a year.
