Ive just bought an ESKY whats next ???

Hey guys,

Could someone PLEEEEEEEEEEASE help me, Ive just bought myself a 1979 Ford Escort (4 door) 1.6 Litre, the only mods it has that I am aware of are extractors. I am on a tight budget as I am still only a student, but im in desperate neede of a increase in power. I have been told to get a Weber Carby (double barrell) aswell as a 2 1/4 inch straight throiugh exhaust (ie remove muffler etc) and a new CAM shaft, and although im not an expert at cars but, would I need to get new push rods (as a new cam may through my valve timing out of sync ???)[MAYBE THERE RIGHT MAYBE THERE WRONG] Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Get The Exhaust first, maby go to the wreakers and try and find a escort with the 2L in it pull the motor out and use that. but it depends on the budget and you knolage

how big should i get, 2inch, 2 1/4 ??? do i lose back pressure from having low large exhaust ?

Do you want an increase in power or better acceleration??

You could try and find a 4.11 panelvan diff, and that would give you a bit more punch off the line...

If you're on a tight budget DON'T START! Once the bug bites you won't stop. You can easily throw double what the car is worth into mods so be warned.

Cheapest method is a second hand 2.0L motor as has already been said. It will cost you less than a new exhaust carby and cam and you'll have all the power you will need ... for now

THanks guys, is it a straight convertion for 1.6L to 2.0L ??Also i went looking around for a carby today and found for me to get a decent weber carby for me would cost anywhere between $600 to $800 bux, is this guy serious ???

I was hoping to increase acceration but in turn wouldnt it reduce my overalll top speed ??

Mate, forget the engine you will get much more bang for your bucks iff you upgrade your brakes and or suspension. Pump up your tyres to 30_35 lbs. Go up into the hills and learn how to drive the thing. When you can honestly say it wont go any faster think about whats holding it back and modify that first. And have fun doing it.

That is very good advice from caprispecial,up grade the brakes and suspension first make the car handle & stop well,join a local car club and do kannas and stuff,learn car control techniques from these old boys.I had a 1300E that mexicos and RS 2000s had trouble keeping with ( except on up hills).Good brakes and suspension is worth 200 hp any day.

Wise advice Caprispecial.....But we are talking to the impatience of youth here. We need a quick solution.
My advice. Put up with lack of power until you can save about a grand. (In the meantime study up on your engine knowledge. ie checking for a dud, blue smoke rattles, all that sort of crap.)
Regularly scan your trading post until an unfinished 2lt project comes up for sale, for say $1500. Make sure its running and drivable before going to look at it. Forget about body/interior/stereo....all the "bling, bling". Just think about mechanics and suspension.
Take a wad of cash and offer the guy $800 working up to a grand. If he bites, you can drive it home and won't have to spot for a tow. Swap it all over and bingo, someone elses hard work for a miserly grand and you can sell off the rest to recover some of the cash.
Upgrading the brakes and suspension could cost you a grand alone and moddifying a 1600 to match a stock 2lt would cost you half that again. As a motor, the old x-flow makes a great coffee table...Something, for the old folks to reminisce over a warm prune juice. Get yourself a real motor and get it quick otherwise you could do what I did and waste $3000 and 6 years on a lump cast iron worth $100 tops.....Sorry X-flow fans.

Yes I see what your saying whooligan seems fairly logical to me. But if quick results are required, why not just get a 2litre escort for the $1500 and sell the car hes got? There you go, instant 2litre conversion and his hands didnt even get dirty.

Thats probably what I would have done, but being elbow deep in oil and muck is good for the kids....Keeps them in the garage and off the streets. (Where they just get in my way.)
