Default has anyone mounted a DOUBLE DIN unite into ute dash?

As per title.

Is there a way to mount a double din unit into an au ute? and without it looking out of place?
Ive just spoken to a stereo installer who seems to think that there was nothing to mount the unit into in previous installations.

cheers

Without some fibreglass work to the centre facia itn't going to fit right, if you have a look at the facia surrounding the cutout you can see it is curved, so at the top and bottom on the sides you will see a bit of the sides of the headunit if not modified to suit.

yeah thats what i found. I was hoping to have the face quite far into the dash but theres nothing to mount it to either, and fabricating something in order to achieve this is much more time and enegry than it is worth to distract me from the road. So im going movie/gameless and sticking to stereo only.

PS sorry moderators for putting this thread in the wrong section. Please put in AUfalcon.com.au.

There was a nice neat double DIN I remember seeing in a sedan .... it comes down to the headunit though ... and how nice it fits .... I am sure it could be done.

Some installs look better then others, but without making some changes to the facia it will never look 100%

I've installed a double din into my dash. Fits perfect. Hardly any gap either. Only sticks out a bit at the bottom because the way the facia curves. I can post a pic up if you want

I guess peoples idea of "fitting perfect" differ from person to person

Here's the pic. I've seen a lot worse. This is probably as good as it will get.

I had a JVC double din unit in my AU fairlane and it looked good, the only bad point was you could not fit the surround clip on piece on that comes with the unit, but it didnt look bad, some people fitted some custom made surround in around the unit made of fibreglass or mdf

It does depend on the type of headunit you choose, you could make most double dins fit, but some will fit awkwardly.

My kenwood double din fits fine. Doesn't look like it's out of place or doesnt look awkward.

Ill grab a pic for you tomorrow if you want

edit: i dont think ill ever buy another single din unit.

Thought of doing it yourself? It fairly simple.

yeah i had, but atm its a time factor. Just gonna get the installer to wire my amp up and speakers with new cabling then i might look at it a bit later down the track when i pulling other interior bits out.

i had a double din dvd unit installed in my old au xr6 was hard finding a place who wanted to do it because of the fact that if the unit dosnt come with a mounting bracket it has to be custom made like mine was and remove most of the dash to rivit it on the inside, i definetly wont be doing it again on my xr8
