i had a bit of a look in a transmission book for a t5 diagram was`nt much there, , but its a common tranny used by ford gm,jeep etc, there are snippets on google , look up borg warner t5 i think , you might find something, there is a couple of pages of a rebuild magazine in a ford mag unless your a subscriber you get the first 2 pages only theres a little bit of the shifter........click on the smaller pics

Well i can tell you there is a bush in there and the shifter has lots of slop when it is buggered. Here are some pics of the buggered bush.

I had this gearbox and the one now in my car next to each other a while ago and this bush is definately the reason.

Cheers, Rhys

Pretty sure it would be easier with the box out but it may be able to be done by simply removing the centre console. Then just support the rear of the box and lower it slowly by removing the rear cross brace from underneath. This may give you enough room to get through from the top to do it. However without having tried this i can't be too sure.

As for a short shifter effectively it shortens the throw between all gears and with a better return spring enable more 'Positive' shifts between gears. This would be most noticeable through the 2-3 shift as this is the worst out of them to start with. However, i have never actually used one so someone who has will be able to tell you more accurately if it is worth it.

A short shifter replaces the top section which unbolts. It also includes the section on the very left of picture 2. This is the mechanism that allows (through different angles) to give it a shorter throw.
Cheers, Rhys

i think i`d rather drop the x member and remove the console than pull the box out if neccassary than pull the box out , does any one have a pic of an au gearbox/tranny tunnel without the console carpet etc?

I will go take one now! Give us a couple of mins

Ok this is it. First photo is with the gear lever and surround. This can be removed by taking off the gear lever and then from underneath there are 4 nuts holding the white plastic thing on.

Then this is what it will look like

The rubber section is part of the shifter block itself as it is molded into it. This from ford is worth about $160 from memory whereas the plastic bush is the only separate part you can change apart from the block and the plastic bit is worth about $23??

Hope this helps.

Cheers, Rhys

Not too sure if you can get away with that? I will be pulling mine apart tomorrow so I will have another look as it is a while since I have had a good look at it.

Also, I know you can order from the US brass bushes to replace the plastic ones. However, they apparently transmit more vibration and I would think would wear the rubber out quicker.

While I had a look at it tonight and have come to the conclusion that there is no way the plastic bush is coming out without damaging the rubber as they have become one over time and use. Not entirely sure how I am meant to use the plastic bush I have now though :/

correct. so you have to put the 5/8th hose (or actually replace the whole part) inside the gear box and then you put the plastic bush in on the shifter
