With some of them ... the ignition barrel was integral to the steering column.

But I thought it was more a case of B-series that it was all integrated though.

Moving to the AU section where you will get more of an audience to assist here.

What year series AU?

You can buy new ignition barrels from Nice Products

e.g. https://niceproducts.com.au/feature/search-by-vehicle/ and https://niceproducts.com.au/feature/search-by-vehicle/

But it's usually the actual lock rather than the barrel the breaks and, if so, you will indeed need a complete new second-hand lock assembly which often does mean buying the whole column from a wrecker and they are getting harder to find.

You could try the people that do these https://fordignitionswitch.com.au/#buynow and https://www.frk1.com.au/ but I don't believe they have a kit for the series I AU and perhaps not the later series AU's either. In any event it sounds like your lock is broken in a different way (as the AU, EL and EF did) and a used lock assemble is required.

The easiest way is to buy one on eBay. I bought one and found my problem was a spring broken in the ignition switch, behind the barrel. To remove the barrel I had to poke a small screwdriver in a hole beneath the metal casing. You have to remove the plastic shroud first.
The current price is $14.95 + $8 postage. You may be able to get express postage.

If you also need to replace the ignition switch behind the barrel, you can get a kit for about $50 and replace it yourself. There is no need to remove the column unless your enjoy lots of unnecessary work. Here is a video on changing one on a Ford Territory, which is fairly similar.

OK, can’t offer suggestions of whom to see for parts/repairs but do you know the old school method of tapping the “anti-theft” bolt loose on the steering lock, with a centre punch?

It’s just a standard thread so when all is fixed you can use a standard bolt and Loctite to reassemble.

Tape the key head securely into the transponder ring around the ignition lock and you can then jump wire the ignition to operate.

Per the second of the links I posted previously they only advertise for BA and BF ; I don't know they have an AU kit.

Nice Products also sell new anti-theft shear bolts to fit e.g. https://niceproducts.com.au/product/nsb200-shear-bolts/

You can also cut a slot in the top of the broken off shear bolts with a dremel tool and cutting wheels and then unscrew them with impact screwdriver.
