Supercars have defended the safety of their events as Newcastle residents call for their round to be axed in the wake of a horror crash at the Sandown 500.

John Iafolla was lucky to walk away when his car flipped multiple times and landed on a ute and resulted in the Toyota 86 race at Sandown 10 days ago being abandoned.

The 2019 Supercars champion Scott McLaughlin wrote off his Ford Mustang in a wild crash at the Gold Coast 600 last month which saw a shock absorber fly onto a spectators' trackside balcony.

The accident is being investigated by Supercars.

The Newcastle East Residents Group (NERG) have renewed their safety concerns amid fears the track is too close to homes and poses a serious risk.

"(Iafolla) is the same guy who crashed in Zaara Street and ended under my balcony in Scott St, while throwing debris over the fence into Zaara Street last year," one resident said.

"What do they say, third time proves it? And the third time is Newcastle."
Scott McLaughlin may have claimed the 2019 Supercars title, but his Bathurst pole and lap record have been scrapped.
(Source: 7NEWS)
Scott McLaughlin may have claimed the 2019 Supercars title, but his Bathurst pole and lap record have been scrapped.

NERG spokesperson Chris Everingham wants safety fences raised and claims 50 per cent of the circuit is lined by homes with some balconies just "two metres" from the track.

"The big problem is international safety standards don't apply to temporary events. It's astonishing but nobody cares," Everingham said.

"Everyone just has their fingers crossed and is hoping against hope that nothing happens.

"They must end the race, they shouldn't be having these races in medium-density streets. It's absolutely crazy."

Supercars event manager Kurt Sakzewski said all tracks are certified and they've worked closely with the Newcastle community since the event started in 2017.

"The safety of the fans, drivers, teams, marshals and others working around the circuit is paramount," Sakzewski said.

"The Newcastle community has embraced the event over its first two years as it highlighted to over 230 million homes across 93 countries some of the city's best landmarks."

Sakzewski said the Newcastle event is forecast to inject almost $60 million in into the region's economy in its first five years and attract 80,000 visitors.

Supercars veteran Mark Winterbottom said he loves racing in the heart of Newcastle and that organisers were never going to please everyone.

CA slammed over 'comedy of errors' before WBBL ban

"You get 10 people who complain and then you get 180,000 people who think it's the best race of the year, so it's tough," Winterbottom said.

"But Supercars do a good job of trying to accommodate everyone. The vibe is good, everyone loves it and the crowds are huge."

The industry is in crisis financially it seems.
Penske reported to be negotiating the buying of Mercedes AMG F1 .
Supercars requires younger viewers/consumers or it dies financially and it’s relevance is decreasing all the time.

Motor racing is dangerous... as the entry ticket states.

I don't know about others but personally I think motor racing went downhill after Group A touring cars, with the gradual introduction of over cautionary stuff like safety cars etc, It will turn into US style racing next where they won't race in the rain.

Never been a fan of street circuit racing, much prefer them out on a race track.

Even F1 is going the American consumer route.......ever so gradually.....drip drip drip. It’s about cost containment and tv revenue, and streaming is doing a number on the television stations and cable also......Foxtel is in trouble with subscriptions in decline substantially.

It is, but minimizing any loss of life or injury is certainly positive. If all that is needed at Newy is bigger fences, thats not a big deal.

1958 Le Mans disaster resulted in over 100 deaths...glad that improvements have been made since then.

Probably more to do with endless reruns and the privilege of paying for advertising.

I cancelled my Foxtel for that very reason. Six years and it was a waste of money.

Newcastle "east enders" as they are not so nicely referred to have been complaining non stop ever since the race was announced in 2016.
This 'issue' is just the most current one since it's new.
Before the first race they were complaining that their house will "crumble into pieces" due to vibrations from the noise. Since that didn't happen they need to look for other things to complain about.

There's a group of about 100 of them that live in the middle of the city centre but expect it to be as quiet as somewhere far off in the country.
Newcastle Herald starts the negative race stories each year in about September.

"The Newcastle East Residents Group (NERG) have renewed their safety concerns amid fears the track is too close to homes and poses a serious risk."

Just a bunch of wowsers who were waiting for such an opportunity to justify their opposition to the race.

Move it to Albert Park - we'll have it in Melbourne if Newcastle doesn't want it

Every street circuit is s$%t. Permanent tracks are generally good because you can see more of the circuit. I wish they could replicate Oran Park somewhere. Fk that was a great circuit. Just too hard to make a permanent circuit pay for itself.

For those who don't know, the Newcastle Herald is a left wing, bleeding hearts journal that specialises in sad stories from disadvantaged persons who think the world owes them a living, and that the Liberal Party (state and federal) are the sole cause of climate change, global warming, overpopulation, all current wars, Brexit, beach erosion, and the fading of curtains during summer..
I buy it once a week, take out the TV schedule, read what problems have beset the NRL Knights this week, chuck the rest in the bin.
I have sat at the Zaara St corner for the last 2 years, good place to be up really close to the action, although it is probably the slowest part of the circuit.
I won't be going this year because apparently I am likely to be killed.

These type of people annoy me.... Buy a place in the City Center then expect it to be as quiet as a bloody church mouse... Oh well I guess some people just HAVE to have something to complain about....

How about the extra income/tourism this event brings to the city of Newcastle?? I bet if any of these wingers own business's they wont be complaining about the extra customers...

The event would have never gone ahead without being fully certified and safe. These NERG idiots have been crying wolf since day one, they are just trying to use the Sandown thing as ammo, even though its not at all relevant to the Newcastle event...

Probably
but I don't recall safety cars at Amaroo, Oran Park, Bathurst, at the start of group A racing.

I have lost interest as the cars now have no relevance to what you can buy on the road. To call the supercar mustang a mustang is to me virtually misleading and deceptive conduct.

My interest is now the Bathurst 12 hour. Toying with idea of going next year to hear all different engines real time- just so hot....

I don’t know if many of the Newcastle inner-city food and drink businesses would agree.
Their complaint has been that the spectators haven’t been using the locals, the pop-up food vendors inside the race precinct are getting the money.
Last year, I went in search of something better than ‘yellow food’ (pies, chips, battered stuff) and came across an outdoor BBQ at Paymasters Café being run by an attractive young lady.
She offered to cook me ‘the biggest and best bacon and egg burger’.
We talked as she cooked, and she said that 2017, they expected a lot of custom through the front door. It didn’t happen. So, they decided to have the outdoor BBQ to entice customers, and it still wasn’t a roaring success, which was evident as I was the only customer at the time. Anyhow, the burger was as promised, and at a very fair price, cheaper than something at the imported pop-up vendors.
I have no doubt that the race is a huge financial benefit in the way of tourism, publicity, and also has been a catalyst to modernising the city. But as for a windfall for local businesses, maybe not, so far.

I had better subscribe as our local paper, the West Australian, has gone the other way and become Liberal Party promotional flyer, climate change denier and Julie Bishop fan club newsletter and I need some balance in my news.

I don't know what it is about Newcastle but those East end cafe's have always struggled for business and are stingy at that.
Paymaster quality and service goes up and down was always overpriced but there is a nice view.
I can image shutting down all the local streets wouldn't help, when there is food vendors allowed to operate within the course.

Me, I go to Goldberg's myself when there.

I don't know how they can use an incident that happened at Sandown raceway as ammunition against this event.

Yep, we quit Foxtel 12 months or so ago.

One of the longest running clubs in Newcastle (the Diggers Club) is shutting it's doors because of the lack of patronage due to the railway being closed. Many business's have moved out, and the light rail abomination has taken roughly 300 parking spaces along Hunter St while reducing traffic to a single lane each direction. The original rail corridor (20 metres away) has become a park of sorts.
The council closed the long running King Edward Park hillclimb because of the noise. Ironic because while that was going on, they were bidding for Supercars.
