Default Oils Aint Oils

Just a quickie. Picked the focus up from the ford dealer. Said I need to book the falcon in for a 60,000 service shortly. Service manager who knows my car, tells me that theres a new oil available that they can put into the VCT. But its about $80 more in the service. Its Castrol Magnatec. Says its better than Mobil One that they use. Its a 5W-40. But he said they can't use it in the GT's, but for the VCT, its a great oil and will offer good protection. Better protection than I am getting now.

I thought it was a bit odd that you can't use it in the boss, but the VCT is ok. I thought if its good for 1 engine, then it should be good for others. Anyway, has anyone used this oil? Is it worth the extra expense for the added protection?

I am thinking about shelling out the extra. I like to maintain my car and if its going to give me long term benefits, then i am very interested.

Just after your opinions on the new oil.

$80 more in the service? We put it in every car at work (unless you want fully synthetic) and I bet if I looked at an invoice the charge for oil would be well under $80.

Personallt I would never put another Castrol product in my car again. I tried Formula R once, drained it out at 2500kms it was that crap.

Sorry, $80 for an inferior product is a joke.

He says its a new oil. But maybe he means its only new to their workshop.

The cost I'm sure would be less than $80. Going to go to Supercheap and check it out on their prices.

Yours being a VCT, I'm sure you've tried a few. I have a brochure on Magnatec. Bt they are trying to sell a product, so its going to say positive things.

So you think sticking with what they currently use is a wiser thing?

Personally I wouldn't touch Magnatec, it sounds like the duck's guts to people who have little to no knowledge of engines and such, that's who's buying it.

Whats it worth at repco etc? bet it is a lot cheaper. Buy some yourself and get them to put it in for you. I think I have it in my boss and it is running sweet, I will check with my mechanic tomorrow and get back to you. If it is good it will be in because he knows that I am fussy as hell and endulge in "spirited driving" occasionally!

Up till recently I tried a few things but kept going back to Shell Ultra (or whatever it was). I've put Penrite HPR in it this last time after a lot of people gave it a good wrap on here... It is top stuff, I'll be sticking with it. After many, MANY years, its the only oil I've found that is better than Shell or Mobil1 and its cheaper too.

I use and swear by Penrite HPR series of oils. Have been using it since the new motor got slapped in. The old motor used to run it as well and the R33 runs it as well. Cannot recommend anything else.

Tried all oils, HPR outdoes all of them.

Yep, gone from using Shell Ultra in the EB, put HPR in the XD and haven't had an issue with it.

Bucky everything I have heard about that Magnatec stuff is baaaaad. I certainly wouldnt be paying $80 for it, actually i wouldnt be paying $80 for ANY oil. But my services are free so it doesnt matter to me.

Being relatively dumb when it comes to oils, what is so good about this Penrite stuff?

The GT's use 0w40 so 5w40 is not thin enough at start up. I believe that is why you can use it in the VCT engine but not the GT's.

I use either GTX3 or GTX2 i cant remember what it is but it works a treat. Way better than the Shell crap i used to put in it. Could have been i was using the wrong viscosity. Was using 20w 50 now using 15w 40.

The thing with Penrite HPR series of oils is; they maintain their lubrication state the longest. After running them 10K compared to other oils you notice the difference. Penrite will not break down inside your engine like other oils, it maintains its lubrication aspect on engine parts for a longer period of time.

Easy, after 2500km's it felt like water. I simply broke down far too quickly.

Pull out the dipstick and rub some of the oil between your fingers... its easy to tell when its gone to crap.

Castrol magnatec is in no way at all better than Mobil 1. Mobil 1 is one of the best oils around . what a load of bull, last time i checked magnetec's about $30 and Mobil 1's about $50+

I'm pretty sure Magnatec is like one of the cheaper oils out there. I can't see it costing $80 EXTRA, that sounds wrong, wrong wrong.

Ford have a deal with Castrol at the moment, so they are recommending Synthetic Castrol Formula R for the Boss's, but only after a run in period on Castrol GTX3...supposedly. However it seems that whatever the dealer has a big drum of at the moment, is the magic oil of choice.

Buy whatever tickles your fancy at Supacheap, and buy a $30 K&N oil filter with the difference, if you really want to spend $80. Probably help more...

Oils usually ain't so much the problem, more how dirty they become, thus how often they are changed.....

I am a BIG penrite fan.

We have just recently started to sell Penrite at work. From what I remember when the rep was here, he basically said, 0W oils should not be on the market in Australia. Car companies use it to help reduce fuel consumption at the expense of engine life. I can't remember the whole story, I'll have a dig through the notes at work and see what I can find.

I think Penrite is great stuff, even before we started selling it at work, I just get it cheaper now . HPR30 is all that goes into my car.

A Ford sales rep told me that the Motorcraft oil for the V8's is Mobil1 0w40 and that is the only oil they recommend because of consumption problems.

Don't flame, just repeating what the sales guy told me.
