Hi Guys,
Just wondered if any as had the same problem? I have a "squealing" noise coming from the right rear wheel, apon further examination, I have found it to be coming from the brake pads attached to the handbrake cable inside the rear disc assembly. When driving if I put the handbreak on and off, it periodically removes the noise for some time. But it has gotten to the point that my handbreak no longer works. Can anyone shed some light on a solution. I have tried having the cable tightened and have had a few mechanics have a look at it, but it has not solved the problem. Regards, 00falcon |

I'm with Casper on this one. I replaced the inner brake shoes about 3 weeks ago, and it's all been quiet on the right rear until yesterday. Now the squeak is back, and i know it won't go away!

I have had this as an ongoing issue now for over 4 years
first noticed about 10000 ks and has been back in to Ford service approx 6 times So far they have replaced the cable and rear rotors once and the hand brake shoes and clips twice They fix it and then after about 1000 Ks it starts again It have been told by Ford service that they are unable to adjust the shoes sufficiently to clear the rotors because of their shape It was fixed again recently and now is worse than it has ever been I live in the hope that somebody may find a fix but knowing my luck it will be just after i sell it |

My handbrake is near non-existant ... cos i need my rotors and pads on the rear ... handbrake cable is adjusted to it's full extent.
Next year it will be attended to when I get the 330mm slotted discs/4-pot calipers/braided lines up front and new standard-size slottted rotors on the rear. Still figuring out what ads to use though ... I think it might be EBC Blackstuff though (I am not doing track work and the ute is underpowered as it is).

Mine makes this sound. It's a total bastard.
The sound stopped a couple of months ago when I put the car in for its one and only service at a Ford dealer. They certainly stopped the squeaking, but they also stopped the handbrake holding the car on any incline at all. So I took it to a local grease monkey. The handbrake works fine now - but the squeal is back. And before people say I should have taken it back to Ford to get them to fix it properly - the truth is I just couldn't be bothered. I would have to leave the car with them all day and organise other transport, and it is just more trouble than its worth. And even then, there is no guarantee that they would fix it properly. One day I'll get the car serviced again, or it'll need something else fixed, and I'll get whoever does the work to look at the handbrake as well. Perusal of these forums indicates that the problem is basically unfixable, unless you're fortunate enough to find one of the very few guys with just the right "touch". In the meantime it just complements the squeaks and squeals from my Ferodo Excel brake pads. I've got a virtual symphony orchestra happening at the moment. |

I have no handbrake, no squeak, but a hugh rattle from the back end.....
It's at the point where I think the whole drive train is going to be picked up by the car behind me. I've had the my rear suspension replaced (new upper bushes as well) but the rattle is still there. Could this be the IRS diff on the way out or rear wheel bearing's or something else? Please help, or the car will be traded.... |

mine squeaked at low speeds so i jacked the car up and spun both wheels and no squeak...i drive again at low speads and it squeaks again... so i jack car up, take both rear wheels off, take that stupid dusk protector off and take the calipers off and then handbrake drum off too.
i banged it on the ground and washed with water from house and put them back nice and clean...this seems to solve the problem for me,, its just a dust build up i think. i have never had problems with my handbrake, it works like a dream. if you guys really dont want the squeal you can always invest in anti squeal, not sure how long it works for but?

Guys, the squealing brakes are not isolated to AUs. I have heard BAs and Holdens including Calais and Stateman. It is just the nature of the type of system used - it sucks, but until someone can find a mechanic that can cure it every single time, I'm afraid it's just something we have to put up with.

Got the same here.
My BA XR8 ute squeals, squeaks, clicks, and doesn't hold. Just about given up on my dealer fixing any of it. But after all *Ford ad* 'no one knows your Ford like we do'. Shame they can't fix any of it... _ Nikk's AU XR8 sedan squeaks somtimes, but at least the handbrake works well : Her's seems to be fine when cold. It only happens when the brakes are hot/warm. Guess it MIGHT stop when the shoes wear a bit, coz the handbrake lever only moves about 4 'clicks'. Ohh, I tried the anti-squeak too. Was OK for a week or 2, but that stuff doesn't last. A pain to get on the shoes too, coz you have to pull it all apart to get to them. |

Damn, and i thought i was the only person with this issue.
Its a great feeling to cruise through town in your new AU Fairlane and drive past all your commodore and clubsport owning mates to be followed by sqeeling and squeeking nosies. No justification goes far enough for that :
