A gentle shake for about 7 or 8 seconds, then got pretty strong for about 5 seconds, monitor was shaking and the person I was on a VC with could see me shaking, then another 5 odd seconds of gentler shaking.

I know it would be nothing compared to other countries, but here in Vic it was something new.

Wouldn't be surprised if it was about a M4

estimated at M 6.0!!!- epicentre in the mountains south or Eildon - about 120km from CBD, would have been hectic in Woods Point - hopefully not too much damage out there

Genuinely worried for Mansfield and other old towns closer with lots of 1800 and 1900's masonry buildings.

When it first started it was fun, but then I actually started to think about going outside when the first decent movements happened.

The seismographs are exactly how it felt. The blue dot was where I started to wonder.

Possibly the only thing that might deter a 3rd day of insurrection. How many will go shake the west gate bridge today?

Seismology Research Centre senior seismologist Wayne Peck said the 5.8 quake was the biggest in Victoria since such events were measured.

He said it was centred at Licola North, near Woods Point, on the Gippsland high country.

Aftershocks of 4.8 are expected today, he said.

And just like that, in a blink of an eye, the state suddenly needs building workers.

Felt it here at work in the Latrobe Valley. I'm on the first floor of our central building, which, being nestled in between our four operating units, has a lot of lower frequency vibration as normal. The building moved quite violently. Wasn't sure if we'd had a catastrophic failure of one of the units. Surprisingly, none of the three operating units tripped. The have tripped on lower magnitude quakes previously.

Must be a pretty scary experience, especially in a multi story building, am glad you are ok!

Feels like the 2nd bullet dodged.

2 days before the last lock down was lifted, wild winds swept through the eastern suburbs, downing trees across the suburbs and ranges. It stopped on the day lock down was lifted. Had it been business as usual, would have been a fair few casualties I reckon, especially around the dandenong ranges.

Some of our workers were up on the 16th floor (we have 20 floors in the boiler house) and they said that the quake was quite scary up there. Don't blame them, really.

in '67 I was driving back from West Coast, south Isl. New Zealand I knew I was tired but when the road in front of me started waving I pulled over for a kip. looked out the side windows and the bloody railway line was doing the same thing except there was no dirt under the tracks. Sat there for over 5 hours before rescue teams went by. Very unpopulated area. spooky ride for next 5 hours home.in a '56 Ford mainline Ute I had purchased from the local council.

There was a small shock first, I had just arrived at Violet Town and went into the cafe near the rail line to order a sandwhich, I said to another bloke, geeze that freight train must be heavy. (they often rattle the houses there) Then there was the major shaking of the buildings in the main street. Outside minutes later all the windows were still rattling.

Sat through the Newcastle one back in 1989.
