Hey guys,
Dad is planning a move to Melbourne for work shortly but has no idea what suburbs to look at and which ones to stay clear of. He is workin in the CBD, so close to the city would be a big plus, but isn't the best off financially so that has to come into it as well. He is lookin for apartments not necessarilly houses, as it is just him and his girlfriend that are heading down. Any help muchly appreciated, thanks in advance Mk II |

Areas around Carlton, Brunswick, Coburg are pretty (relatively) inexpensive places to live that are convenient to get to the city in.

If he isn't gonna have a car, then find out what are his job will be in. Find out what public transport it will near it. And work it out from there. Most places are fine and you shouldn't have too much trouble.

What's his budget (other than 'not well off')? Does he prefer 'lively' or quiet? Anything in Melb will be noisier than Maitland but a block away from trams, trains and a restaurant strip will usually give you more sleep!

Agree with 4vman, docklands, its still pretty for an apartment there and always something happening, great waterfront living a stones throw from the CBD

Thanks heaps guys, his budget is going to be somewhere between $200-$300 a week, not much for Melbourne we know. He will be looking for somewhere more quiet, but an appartment is an appartment at the moment.
He is workin on Collins St (I think), so public transport will only be an issue from where he is living. I have passed on all the info that you have been giving and he is very thankful, it's helping a lot. Mk II |

Footscray. Close to the city and a very exotic... "Culture" haha. Im sure u could find a shack there for $200 a week hahaha

THe West is cheaper, but it is not as nice as the East (with all respect to those in the West -I have units in St Albans, and don't like going there!).
Many, many apartments in places like Fitzroy, Carlton etc. There's also a range of places on the Glen Waverley line too, but are not as close to the city.

$200 a week will get you a small 1-2br unit in majority of suburbs here.. just dont expect the world for it thats all

For $200-300 he can get a decent 3 bedroom house in geelong including a weekly train ticket, plus it's heaps quieter compared to the city....
