Default CA18 Mk1 Escort

Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction. I am after some info on how to do this conversion. Or does anyone on here know what is involved?

Get in touch with engineer.

They'll let you know what needs to be tested and what has to comply with what.

From there you'll have to work out what do do.

You'll need custom mounts, ECU, CA gearbox, probably the drive shaft and 180 diff..

There were a couple of CA18 powered cars at the Small Ford Sunday in Bundoora (also a couple of SR20), the CA18 is noticeably smaller physically

I have a mk1 escort with an FJ20 turbo in it. Its a tight fit but well worth it depending on what sort of power you are after...

Mate even non-turbo SR20 would fly. A N14 Pulsar SSS FWD is a high 15 low 16 car stock at around 1100kg.

Get a turbo RWD version (out of a 180, Silvia etc) which can run in 14s stock and thats a reciepe for crazyness.

Id suggest the CA18DET just for drivability's sake. It would also be a cheaper exercise as heaps of 180sx owners are selling them off as they replace their engines with the SR20DET.

My nephew wants to pull the SR20 turbo out of his Silvia & put it in his Mk1 Escort. Should be interesting as it has 400rwhp! In a 900kg Escort it should go pretty well, 10sec quarters easily.
We're looking at the ins & outs of the conversion to see how difficult it will be.

in 180's and silvias the ca18 is a straight swap for an sr20, engine mounts, etc, so if ya gonna go through the trouble of putting one in an escort, why not go for the sr20. Much faster way easier to get performance out of. They are more expensive but to do this conversion properly its gonna be expensive anyway, so whats $1000 - $1500 more for the better engine. Just my opinion, Not trying to grill anyone

As I said above the CA18 is smaller and there are aspects of the Escort engine bay that are a bit tight, also I think the CA18 is lighter (haven't seen figures to know what the difference is though) which would improve the handling - helpful if you like driving around corners as well as straights. I don't know how much power you can get from a CA18 turbo easily/cheaply/reliably but how much hp do you need?

Thats a good point there. You'd have to re-engineer if you went from CA-18 to SR20 if thats what you wanted after a little bit.

ca18 = cast block, sr20 = alloy block, you tell me which is heavier

ca's also arnt that much smaller, the sr is only a slight bit wider. they are apprx same length.

i was thinking of doing an sr20 converison into my mk2.

the sr20 is physically bigger than a CA18
weight is very simailar
if anything the SR20 is heavier
dont forget its runs steel liners in the alloy block

they will fit where a CA has been though.. )
