Nothing wrong with AU1s im on my second one the first did 300,000kms still going strong and the current one Fairmont Ghia 200,000kms and running beautifull was offered $3,500 on a BA at a car yard, decided to keep the AU. Still got its orig radiator. Not bad for a 10yr old car.

Well UK, a quick glance through ebay revealed quite a few good bargains and with-in your sons price margin. There was a beautiful series 1 fairmont, black and kitted, but it had like 350,000km. There was also a series 1 xr6 on there for 4.5g. Its up to you but with the reliability from my AU i'd say their good choice for his first car.

Toyo's seem pretty solid
We recently bought a Soarer for me and a baby lexus for some one else both with minor dings easily repairable ( not rite offs) at the auctions about 1/2 retail so you should be able to find a good solid car which has all the modern stuff and protect that child ( can't allow them to much power either for a while)

James still looking. My son will not fit into a long list of cars, BUT he is now very keen on the 'inside look' of Fairmonts (doesn't like 'boring AU's). So I am now looking for the perfect AU Fairmont, low ks, dual fuel, 12 months rego, one owner, etc etc, for $100 ono

UK, glad you are with me on buying a 1st good reliable car is an AU for your son - altho for me it's my daughter ...

I'm wanting her to get the series II tho, much better than 1, but having said that, my Galaxy Blue XR, I never had an issue with ... better material on the seats IMO ... which is also ONLY cosmetic !

Which 1 she will choose over all. is yet to be known ...

If our kids have been learning in these, why does it have to be so bad ?
When they are use to driving a big car & some power, that can only be a good thing ?
My daughter drivers my BA & Luvvv's it ...

Good luck with your search UK

Mine fits that bill 60 times over. Only a series one, but with tickford/premium brakes, so better than AU2 anyway! PM me if interested.

How about checking out the auctions....
http://www.manheimfowles.com.au/

3 or 4K at an auction might net a very tidy AU.

I bought my first car last year for 6.8k it's a s1 fairmont ghia with 170 000 k's and almost all the factory extras, only thing thats broken on it so far was the ****** power windows.
I wouldnt go a s1 unless its a fairmont or an xr otherwise you'll end up with that horrible front grille.
and your much better off insuring it under your name than under your sons unless you wanna be up for 2 grand.
and whoever said that an AU was too powerful for a new driver, not everyones as **** at driving as you, plus your better off having a decent sized 6 cylinder with airbags than some little import that pancakes and kills you if you ever happen to crash into a decent sized 6 cylinder

yeah im with that notion , i picked mine up there , mint condition , but dont take the first one that comes up, i paid $9000 in 2005 for a late 2002 series 3 , low km , mech checked it over and said it was one of the best kept AU's he'd seen. im sure $4000 would buy you a GOOD SERIES 3
